League of Ireland 2026: Three Clubs, One Title, Zero Margin

James McLean is back at the Brandywell after 15 years away, having helped Wrexham win back-to-back promotions in England. The 36-year-old won’t score 20 goals, but he brings personality, experience, and a dressing-room presence that Derry have lacked in big moments.

Midfielder Darragh Markey scored the winner in the President’s Cup against Rovers, and his move from Drogheda has already looked like smart business. St Patrick’s Athletic under Stephen Kenny remain the dark horse. Max Mata arrived from Sligo Rovers to replace Tottenham-bound Mason Melia – big boots to fill. Kenny’s sides play attractive football but have lacked a killer instinct in decisive matches.

Bohemians, Galway United and Dundalk are capable of beating anyone on a given Friday night, but a 36-game title challenge requires a level of consistency that only three or four clubs in the division can sustain. The promoted clubs and the bottom half will be battling to avoid the relegation playoff on November 8.

What to Watch This Season

The title race will likely come down to Rovers, Derry and Shelbourne – in that order of favourites. Rovers have the squad depth. Derry have the hunger. Shelbourne have the squad but need to prove the mentality survived the coaching change. European commitments in summer will stretch all three, and whoever handles that congestion best will be holding the trophy in November.
