Edwin Edogbo stands on the brink of an Ireland debut

Edwin Edogbo stands on the brink of an Ireland debut-and he’s determined not to let the moment slip.

The 23-year-old lock arrived early for Thursday’s session at Ireland’s Portugal base, engaging in an extended tactical discussion with defence coach Simon Easterby. While teammates warmed up in clusters, Edogbo focused on fine-tuning his role-a sign of his readiness for Six Nations action against France.

“If the chance arrives, I’m fully prepared,” he said. Yet he remains grounded amid fierce competition from established stars like James Ryan and Tadhg Beirne. “This environment is as much about learning as performing. I’m absorbing everything I can from the senior guys.”

Standing 6’5″ and weighing 127kg, Edogbo brings raw physicality Ireland has lacked. His path here wasn’t smooth: a ruptured Achilles on St Stephen’s Day 2023 sidelined him for nearly two years. He returned to competitive rugby only in October 2025-and earned an Ireland call-up after 19 minutes of match play, proving Andy Farrell had long tracked his potential. A November concussion delayed his Chicago trip, but nine consecutive games since have restored his rhythm.

Rugby wasn’t his first love. Edogbo dabbled in soccer, GAA, basketball and tennis before following his younger brother Seán into the sport at 13. He began as a centre, shifted to back row as he grew, then settled naturally in the second row. Last week delivered twin family triumphs: Edwin joined the Ireland squad while Seán earned man-of-the-match honours on his Munster debut-a proud moment for Cobh Pirates, their hometown club.

Though Covid and injury blocked his U20 Ireland pathway, Edogbo never lost connection to his roots. He still trains at the Pirates’ clubhouse gym when home. If capped this championship, he’d become the club’s first homegrown international.

Munster was his childhood dream-he debuted in red at 19. Ireland always lingered in the background. Now, with Paris looming, that dream edges closer. “Representing your country is the ultimate honour,” he said. “Everything that happened-the injury, the wait-led me here. I’m ready to kick on.”
