Newcastle’s Howe Confident Tonali Won’t Become the Next Isak Saga
Eddie Howe is adamant that Newcastle will not face another prolonged transfer battle over one of their prized assets after moving swiftly to address speculation surrounding Sandro Tonali.
The Magpies manager held face-to-face talks with the Italian international on Monday after reports emerged linking the midfielder with a deadline-day approach from Premier League leaders Arsenal. With memories of last summer’s bruising and ultimately unsuccessful fight to retain Alexander Isak still fresh, Howe was taking no chances.
Quick Conversations, Clear Answers
Howe wasted little time seeking reassurance from his 25-year-old midfielder once the Arsenal rumours surfaced. The outcome, he says, left him in no doubt about Tonali’s state of mind.
“Sandro’s absolutely fine,” Howe told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Manchester City. “His only focus when we spoke was Manchester City and trying to win that game. There’s absolutely no issue with Sandro himself – he’s very happy and he’s committed.”
Newcastle moved privately to shut down the speculation, insisting no contact had taken place with Arsenal. The club’s sensitivity is understandable: just months ago they reluctantly accepted a £130 million offer from Liverpool for striker Isak after spending an entire summer resisting his departure.
No Campaign of Destabilisation
Asked directly whether Monday’s rumours signalled the beginning of an orchestrated effort to unsettle his player, Howe was measured but largely unconcerned.
“I don’t think so, but lots of things happen without my knowledge,” he acknowledged. “As far as I’m aware, we’ve got an outstanding footballer and an outstanding person. He’s very happy here – great relationship with me, with his teammates. He seems really, really happy within himself.”
Howe accepted the inevitable reality that elite talent attracts attention. “Our best players will always draw glances from other clubs – that’s just football. We want to keep the group together, keep being progressive, and Sandro plays a huge part in that.”
Tonali’s contract offers Newcastle considerable leverage. The former AC Milan star is tied to St James’ Park until 2029 with the option of an additional year – meaning any interested party would face enormous financial and logistical hurdles.
A Player Newcastle Stood Behind
The club’s relationship with Tonali carries particular depth following a difficult chapter early in his Newcastle career. Just five months after completing a £55 million move from Milan in July 2023, the midfielder received a ten-month ban for betting offences – a period during which Newcastle publicly and privately supported him rather than distancing themselves.
That loyalty appears to have fostered genuine attachment. Having returned from suspension and reestablished himself as a central figure in Howe’s midfield, Tonali’s commitment to the project seems to extend beyond contractual obligation.
Eyes on Manchester
For now, both manager and player are channelling their energy toward more immediate matters. Wednesday night’s trip to the Etihad represents a significant opportunity for Newcastle to reach a major domestic cup final – the kind of occasion that reinforces why ambitious players should want to stay rather than seek opportunities elsewhere.
“I can only speak about Sandro as a person and his mindset right now,” Howe concluded. “And having discussed things with him, he’s absolutely fine.”
