How the Collection Got to Waterford
The English museum that previously held the collection closed because the economics of specialist small museums in England became unworkable after 2020. Funding structures that had supported institutions of that type for decades shifted, and the collection needed a new home. David Bowles identified it as a match for the Irish Museum of Time’s existing holdings and moved to secure it before it dispersed to private buyers or auction.
The curatorial logic is sound. The Irish Museum of Time’s existing collection focuses on Swiss and English precision watchmaking from the 17th through 19th centuries. Cuckoo clocks are at the opposite end of the horology spectrum: folk objects designed for agricultural households in pre-industrial rural Germany, made from local materials by craftspeople whose primary skill was woodworking rather than clockmaking. Holding both collections in the same institution tells a more complete history of what timekeeping meant to different people in the same historical period.
