The Annual Waterford Chamber of Commerce dinner held in the Tower Hotel on Friday night last was a great success, not least by the contribution of the hugely entertaining guest speaker Mr. John Teeling who told the audience that the recession is over.
He was welcomed by Chamber President Ms. Nora Widger who also revealed that they will be launching a Budget Voucher scheme this week in conjunction with the Winterval Festival. She also thanked Bank of Ireland who were the main sponsors and said they were sponsoring a building business momentum from the 15th to 22nd November nationwide.
Mr. Teeling said that although Ireland was still in debt the recession was over and he outlined what he saw were the reasons for success in the future:
1, Idea; 2, Financial support; 3, The ability to handle uncertainty; 4, Enthusiasm, determination and flexibility.
He said that in the next 15 to 20 years there will be two billion more middle class citizens on the planet. They would have an enormous spending capacity and would seek the goods and services to measure up to their new found status.
Mr. Teeling then spoke of his experiences as an entrepreneur and the various markets all over the world including China, Vietnam, Nigeria, South America. He said that Ireland had a huge advantage in its agricultural potential. One of the principal commodities which we also had in abundance was water, and this would be a vital resource way into the future.
His speech was peppered with highly amusing anecdotes of his own experiences and observations and its conclusion was greeted by sustained applause.
The Mayor of Waterford Collr. John Cummins in his address spoke of the resilience of Waterford and its people. He also stated that Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, would be visiting Waterford this weekend to speak at the Young Fine Gael conference which would bring about five hundred delegates to the city.
The drinks reception prior to the meal was sponsored by McDonald Dwyer Reddy and Byrne Insurances. The entertainment was provided by Waterford Institute of Technology Youth Choir; Richie Hayes sponsored by Book A Room; The Trio Libra sponsored by David M. Breen and Co. and the Disco at midnight sponsored by Dooley's Hotel.

As the world turnsWe've had an Ard Fheis by the main Government party, stars walking down the red carpet at the Oscars and a notorious gangland figure being shot. But as much as all of these news stories have spent their particular moments in the spotlight there is still really only one news item out there and that is the situation in the Ukraine. We have had comments and statements from nearly every one involved in what is happening but it still seems that it is Russia who is really setting the agenda. …
We're delighted to announce the launch of the new-look Waterford Today website. Tell us what new features you would like to see added?
