Waterford Votes 'Yes' in Referendum

Wednesday, 6th June 2012

The Waterford electorate voted 'Yes in the Fiscal Stability Pact Referendum on Thursday of last week.

From the eligible electorate of 76,993 in the constituency just 51% decided to exercise the franchise. Of this number 22,585 voted 'Yes' while 16,585 voted 'No'. The number of spoiled votes was 182.

Deputy Ciara Conway welcoming the result said “It's important to note that this was not a vote for austerity.  It has been a vote for economic stability - the platform on which recovery is built. I'd like to personally thank our Labour team in Waterford City and County, who have put a lot of time into delivering leaflets and talking to people throughout the constituency to explain the merits of supporting the Treaty”.

The Campaign against Household and Water Tax wished to thank all those who voted 'No' in the Referendum, and those who worked so hard over the last number of weeks for a 'No' vote.

Despite threats of Armageddon, there was a substantial 'No' vote, just over 40%, and a huge abstention. While fear was a winner, as people worried about a harsher budget in December, promised by Minister Noonan if a 'No' vote was carried, and the inability of the State to secure monies from the ESM in the event of a 'No' vote.
