Kilmacthomas Library Redevelopment

Wednesday, 6th June 2012

Kilmacthomas based Labour County Councillor Ger Barron has welcomed the confirmation by the library service that the town is to get a new library premises. The current library premises which was opened in 2003 and which serves a population of 1500 has a membership of 600 of which 65% are either children or young adults is totally inadequate to provide a modern library service. Cllr Barron says that the current library issued 6,500 items last year from a stock of approx 4,000 items of stock, the new premises which will be located in the old courthouse on Main St will be have a floor space more than twice the size of the current library and will carry a much larger stock of books and media items. Apart from the increased size of the new premises the redevelopment plans include a study area, exhibition area, casual reading area and a meeting and community use area. The redevelopment is scheduled to take place over the summer months and will be complete in September with an official opening due to take place in Mid October, in the mean time a limited library service will continue to be provided. Cllr Barron says that this good news story is contrary to the level of cutbacks that we see daily in our public services and is an indication of the Councils commitment to the library service and to the Mid Waterford area that will enhance the quality of life for many people of the town and the surrounding areas. Waterford County Council has a wonderful record in the provision of library services in the County which now is needed more than ever in these challenging and economically difficult times.
