Illegal dump under investigation
Wednesday, 9th May 2012
Waterford City Council are investigating a complaint from Sinn Fein Councillor John Hearne that an illegal dump is located at St. John’s River near the Inner Ring Road.
Information was given to Collr. Hearne which he decided to investigate for himself. He then brought the matter to the attention of the City Council.
He was informed by Council Officials that no landfill licence existed for that area.
He said that it was very disturbing that someone would put a landfill right beside what should be a beautiful river walk way in the heart of Waterford City.
Collr. Hearne was told that if there was toxic material in the illegal landfill site it could cost a potential multi million Euro bill to clean up.
He said that the landowner is co-operating with the City Council officials and is reported to have said that they had no knowledge of illegal dumping on the land in question.
It is understood that staff from the Engineering Department are to conduct tests on the site to ascertain what material is located there, and whether that material is toxic in nature. It is expected to take some weeks to finalise investigations into the matter and a full report will be made in due course.
