Vandals disrupt residents and businesses in St. Paul’s parish
By David Pheasey
Eircom customers were left without phone lines last week after an Eircom junction box was destroyed as a result of vandalism in the Larchville area of the city. Two wheelie bins were set alight and pushed up against the junction box, melting the internal wiring.
This act of vandalism disrupted local people and business in the area including, the credit union and Pat Kiely’s Spar shop.
John Hickey manager of the Credit Union was very frustrated with the outcome of the vandalism. "We noticed the problem Monday morning when we disabled the alarms and the system was showing up faults in the system. We have been left without all external communications. All our calls are being diverted to a single mobile creating a major disruption to our service".
Local shop owner Pat Kiely was extremely angry at the effects this act of vandalism was having with the running of his shop. " We noticed problems on Sunday morning when we opened."
When Waterford Today spoke to Pat on Thursday last he hadn’t been able to do lotto or accept credit cards since Sunday.
On speaking to Eircom press office on Thursday afternoon they expected to have the problem resolved by that evening or Friday morning. "We have had crews working on replacing the damaged cabinet since Monday and a full service should be back by Friday afternoon at the latest."
