Fight to retain Kill Post Office
Wednesday, 25th January 2012
Over 150 people packed the local Community Hall in Kill on Monday night to demand the re-opening of their local Post Office which has remained closed since a robbery on the 5th October last.
Three of the local TD’s, Paudie Coffey, Ciara Conway, John Halligan and Senator David Cullinane attended the meeting. They told the meeting that they had received correspondence from An Post to state that the post office was closed and would not re-open.
Speaker after speaker declared that they wanted their local Post Office to be re-opened and decried the fact that they had to make a 20 mile round journey to Kilmacthomas to transact their personal business including receipt of social welfare entitlements.
The attendance included residents from Kill, Dunhill, and Bonmahon.
The meeting was told by Mr. John Halligan that over 500 sub post offices had been closed by An Post over the past number of years.
Speaking on local radio on Tuesday morning former Postman in Kill, Tom Power said that rural Ireland had to get up off its knees. He said that a petition had been drawn up and the next step was to appoint a delegation to travel to Dublin to meet with postal authorities and insist that their local post office be reinstated. He said that they would also ask to meet with the Minister for Communications, Mr. Pat Rabbitte, T.D.
