Rapturous reception for Thomas Barr

Thomas Barr beams as he displays his European Bronze medal on his return to Ireland following his excellent performance in the European Chamionships in Berlin recently.

Waterford’s European Championship bronze medal winner Thomas Barr received a rapturous reception in Dublin Airport on Monday evening last when he returned home as the first Irishman to win a European medal in a Sprint event since 1934. Wearing his trademark beaming smile the 26 year old affable Waterford man was welcomed home by his parents Tom (Senior) and mum Martina, along with club mates from Ferrybank A.C.

Interviewed after his bronze medal success in Berlin Thomas said "This is an unbelievable feeling. I felt so relaxed beforehand and knew it would take something close to my personal best for me to get a medal. "I'm thrilled. I knew I had that time in me but it just had not come to fruition this year. It did here though. "I felt really nervous but as the day went on I felt so much more relaxed. "The Irish support out here just blew me away and it made a difference. To see so many Irish tricolours in the Stadium, I am just so grateful for their support."

Drawn in lane 8 commentators on RTE TV remarked how relaxed he was and it was obvious from the start that he was determined to get among the medals. Approaching the final bend he was in third place but the Frenchman Vaillant came up to his side, but Thomas, with a brilliant burst of speed, drew ahead of him and finished a great third to secure his European bronze medal. The stadium erupted in ecstasy as the many Irish present including his parents and team mate roared their appreciation for his magnificent achievement. Thomas also thanked everyone who supported him including his coaches, his training group, his physio and his family. "I couldn't do it without them - a massive thank you to you all," concluded an ebullient Thomas Barr.

The information and background that each of the stall holders were able to give on the provenance of their food was really interesting an …
