The death of a 27 year old musician following an assault in Waterford City Centre has resulted in the Garda upgrading their investigation to murder.

Damien O'Brien, a member of the local indie/rock band Chimpanbee received a number of serious head injuries at the junction of the Manor/John Street around 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 7.

He was moved to University Hospital Waterford and then transferred to Cork University Hospital where he died on Friday last.

A native of Kilmacow, he leaves behind his mother Kathleen; sisters Claire and Sandra; brothers Derek and Chris and girlfriend Catherine. He was predeceased by his father Chris.

Tributes poured in on social media to Damien who was described as "gentleman", as well as a "musical genius, with a pitch perfect ear."

Paddy Casey, who played a gig last Saturday night at the Churchyard Sessions in Bailey's New Street, also paid tribute to Damien, dedicating his song Bend Down Low in his memory.

A 25 year man has been arrested following the assault and released without charge.

A file was currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
