Waterford Local Area Network Opposing Violence Against Women (LAN) held an information and awareness raising event  'Change the Conversation'

The LAN event was held in Carrickphierish Library on 5th December 2017 as part of the global 16 Days of Action opposing violence against women which runs annually from 25th November (International Day Opposing Violence Against Women) to the 10th December (International Human Rights Day).

The event was attended by approximately 60 people and aimed to raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence with a particular focus on the impact on young people & ways of addressing it.

Local Area Network member Kay Scanlon, Department of Social Protection, introduced and chaired the event.

The following Organisations presented information on domestic violence, its impact and the supports & services available for young people in Waterford:

Heather Sinnott - Le Cheile presented a short Film from the perspective of a young service user

Pat McBride - Waterford & South Tipperary Community Youth Services

Adrian Hogan - Squashy Couch

Anne Goodwin – Tusla: Therapeutic Services for Waterford and Wexford

Catherine Kiersey - Barnardos

Claire Coughlan - Oasis House, Women’s Refuge

Thanks to everyone who attended the event, to the library in Carrickphierish for the use of their beautiful new building, to Tusla (CYPSC) for funding this event and to TREO for providing a bus to take people to and from the event.

The Waterford Local Area Network (LAN) is a network of statutory, community and voluntary groups that provide services to women and children who are or have experienced domestic abuse. The LAN aims to raise awareness of the issue of violence against women, improve communication between service providers, help women access those services and adress issues that place barriers to women and childrens safety.
