Farm Safely - Don't become a drowning statistic
During this week's busy National Ploughing Championships, Irish Water Safety is pleading with farmers to reduce the high risk to children and adults from falling in to water barrels, slurry tanks and ponds and is appealing to farmers to ensure that a ringbuoy and rescue pole with rope is permanently within reach of all open slurry tanks and any other bodies of water.
Rivers and water collection tanks can be lethal if the proper precautions are not taken. Visitors to the Show should include the Farm Safety village in their tour for advice on all aspects of water safety around farms.
Since the start of 2007, there have been 22 work-related fatalities where the victim drowned to which will be added the recent tragic drowning of three adults in a farm slurry tank.

Combat Anti Social Behaviour - Jason Murphy
Wednesday, 26th September 2012

Jason Murphy calls for CCTV and Security Lighting to combat anti social behaviour
Residents in Larchville are being subjected to ongoing upset due to the anti social behaviour of a small minority in the area.
Wheelie bins are being overturned weekly and even set alight. The area is then strewn with rubbish and burnt debris. Jason Murphy has strongly condemned this and has appealed to residents in the area to wait until the morning of the collection to place their bins outside instead of the night before.
Jason stated 'Unfortunately due to this problem people in the area find themselves having to put their bins out at the last minute before collection; this is a sad reflection on the times we live in when the behaviour
Waterford tops illegal cigarette figures
Wednesday, 19th September 2012
Waterford has topped the figures for illegal cigarettes according to statistics released by the Irish Tobacco Manufacturers Advisory Committee (ITMAC). The research showed that 44.5% of the cigarettes in Waterford were non Irish duty paid (NIDP), the highest percentage in the country and well above the average of 29.8%.
The figures, which were collected and compiled by MS Intelligence for the second quarter of 2012, show that the average of 29.8% is well above the average from the same period last year which was only 23.8%.
The research, which was carried out across 22 towns and cities across the country, sees Newbridge in Kildare with the next highest NIDP rate after Waterford at 41.5% and Limerick city having the third highest at 37.5%.
A spokesperson for Irish Tobacco Manufacturers Advisory Committee (ITMAC) said; “The figures are certainly worrying when you look at the

'Waterford being undermined' - Wyse
Wednesday, 19th September 2012
THE proposal by Environment Minister Phil Hogan concering the possibility of Waterford city an county councils being merged has been slammed by Cllr. Gary Wyse, who says the proposal should be looked on against the overall social/economic environment rather than a narrow focused approach that may generate very little real savings and, at worst, could disenfranchise the people we represent from positive democratic representation, could further alienate people from the local councils and create a non viable area management scheme due to the diverse service requirements of urban and rural members of the public.
Is this decision in the best interests of the people of Waterford City and County? If there was a plebiscite would they vote for change if they had a chance to voice their opinion? We live in harsh economic times but there comes a time when enough

Wednesday, 19th September 2012

For four generations the Molloy's name has been synonymous with the highest quality and best value meat in Waterford. Now their dedication to the craft of butchering has been recognised with the highest award that the industry can bestow. Both brothers, Jack and Keith Molloy, and their shops on Barracks Street and at the Ardkeen Shopping Centre have earned the distinction of becoming the first butchers' shops to win the Certificate of Craft Butchers not only in Waterford but in the South East. The award was presented to them recently at a ceremony hosted by celebrity chef, Nevin McGuire. Jack and Keith Molloy are now part of a very select group that totals only 50 in the entire country. The 1st annual Donal O'Connor Memorial
Wednesday, 19th September 2012

The first annual Donal O'Connor Memorial Cycle took place on Sat 8th September to mark World Suicide Awareness week. The cycle was a family-friendly 10K cycle from Kingfisher Club in Waterford to Tramore GAA and was very well-attended, with a great mix of cyclists coming out on the day.
The charity cycle raised €1500 for Waterford Marine Search & Rescue, a voluntary organisation who patrol Waterford's rivers and waterways saving lives and preventing suicides. The cycle culminated in a family entertainment day at Tramore GAA with music, face-painting, refreshments and a special balloon release. The balloon release saw hundreds of yellow balloons released at 1 pm in honour of the many lives lost to suicide in Waterford - each person had the opportunity to attach a personal message to their
New Oireachtas petitions system
Wednesday, 19th September 2012
Dear Editor,
As a believer in democracy, I welcome the new Oireacthas petitions system whereby any of us can petition the Oireachtas on issues of public concern. But I would question whether members of the Committee to which the petitions will be presented will be capable of dealing with each issue strictly on its own merits. My concern arises from the fact that the Joint Committee on Public Service and Petitions is, like all other Oireachtas committees, composed of politicians ...TDs and Senators.
I would love to think that each of the politicians on the Committee will address the concerns of petitioners fairly and with forensic objectivity, but past experience does not inspire confidence in that regard.
My fear is that they may be tempted to approach each issue from their own party political perspectives or prejudices, or with an eye to electoral

- A Government Successread more »
Once in a blue moon. As rare as hen's teeth. A Government success. Each of those three sentences are as unusual and as rare as each other. But the last one seems to be about to take place. The Government has announced that it plans to give each child in the State a second year of free pre-school. It might not sound like earth shattering news but if it does happen then it could be one of the most significant things that this Government has done since it took office. Any money that is given over to education is a …
