Pro-Life campaigner debating challenge to Waterford Oireachtas Members
Tuesday, 15th January 2013
A prominent Waterford Pro-Life campaigner Mr. John Walsh, The Grange, John’s Hill has thrown down the gauntlet to three local Oireachtas members to debate the issue at any time and at any venue of their choosing.
The three local Oireachtas members he has challenged are Ciara Conway, Labour T.D.; Mr. John Halligan, Indpendent T.D.; and Senator David Cullinane, Sinn Fein. He has challenged the three on the basis of their pro-choice stance on the issue in public statements they have issued.
Mr. Walsh has been a strong pro-life advocate for many years and has played a prominent organising role in various referenda on the issue in the Waterford Constituency.
In his statement Mr. Walsh made no reference to the three other Oireachtas members, Fine Gael’s Mr. John Deasy, T.D.; Mr. Paudie Coffey, T.D.; and Senator Maurice Cummins, Leader of the Seanad.

The process will involve meeting dozens of groups including business leaders, trade unions, community groups, educational providers, the unemployed and sectoral interest groups. Senator Cullinane will present a draft Jobs Action Plan for the Southeast to the Committee in June that will recommend clear and realistic interventions and actions which need to be made to help create jobs in the region.
Speaking today Senator Cullinane said:"The percentage on the live register for the Southeast is 19.7%, nearly 25% above the average for the state, which is 14.8%. In Waterford alone
Sinn Fein Councillor opposes HSE Service Plan
Tuesday, 15th January 2013
Sinn Fein City Councillor John Hearne has described the HSE Service Plan 2013, approved today by Health Minister James Reilly, as a plan for slashing our public health services.
Describing the cutting of 40,000 medical cards as an "attack on people on low incomes", Cllr Hearne said:
"This plan implements the savage cuts to public health services imposed by the Fine Gael/Labour Coalition in Budget 2013.
"It is not a service plan – it is a plan for slashing services.
"Of the total of €721 million in cuts in this plan a massive €323 million is cut from primary care. This makes a mockery of the government’s so-called reform programme with primary care at its centre.
"Minister Reilly has signed off on a plan that will deprive some 40,000 people of medical cards in 2013 and many more thereafter as the income criteria for receiving
Panic alarm cuts would have cost lives John Halligan TD
Tuesday, 15th January 2013
Independent TD for Waterford Deputy John Halligan has welcomed the Government’s U-turn on a proposal to half the grant for home panic alarms, a plan which Deputy Halligan described as ‘short-sighted pennypinching’.
The scheme is vital in supporting older people to live longer in their own homes, Deputy Halligan said.
"The €1.3 million savings that would have been made from mooted cuts to the Seniors Alert Scheme was a paltry sum of money, when compared to the €1 million being squandered on trinkets as part of the EU Presidency or the extortionate €244,000 being spent on an EU Presidency website that could, I am reliably informed, have been done for no more than €16,000."
"Two separate attacks have occurred in Waterford in recent times whereby elderly people were brutalised and beaten in their own homes and an increased number of calls are being

Labour TD for Waterford Ciara Conway says moves are underway to make it easier for people to access information from a range of public bodies , including the Garda? and NAMA.
"My colleague, Minister Brendan Howlin, has been discussing the general scheme of the Freedom of Information Bill at an Oireachtas Committee," said Ciara Conway TD.
"This new Freedom of Information law would extend to the administrative side of the Garda Síochána and all statutory bodies and agencies. These changes will undo the damage done by Fianna Fáil in 2003 that reversed parts of the ground-breaking law put in place by the Rainbow Government.
It’s also planned to cover public financial bodies including NAMA, the NTMA, NPRF and NDFA l, as well as the Central Bank subject to EU

Not so GR8 G8With world attention on Fermanagh as the meeting place of the latest G8 Summit it is no wonder that locals are basking in the reflected spotlight. We have all been told, if we haven't already experienced at first hand, the beauty of the location. We know about the exclusiveness of the hotels that the various leaders are going to be staying as well as some of their security detail. We know about the menus from which they will be choosing from. There is little about summit meeting that the …
