McCarthy at World Indoor Championships in Poland

From Friday to Sunday next the World Indoor Championships are in Sopot in Poland and Ireland has five athletes competing including David Mc Carthy West Waterford.who is entered for both the 1500 and 3000 metres as he had the standard for both but he will compete in the 1500 heats on Friday morning. We wish him well and hope he can progress to the final which however is a tall order and which will have to see him at his very best Mark English from Donegal in the 800 metres may make the final of that event

Many Munster Indoor winners

On Saturday and Sunday last the Munster under 14 to 19 indoor championships were in Nenagh and there were many winners and second and third placings by athletes from Ferrybank, Waterford and Tramore. For Ferrybank AC the following won titles; Siobhan Whelan under 19 200 metres ans triple jump,Tadg Brennan under 18 1500 metres,Anne Corcoran Shot Putt under 16,Cormac McCann u 16 60 and 200 metres, Tom Gallagher u 14 long jump, Sean Whittle u 19 triple jump Silver medals were won by Eoin Browne u17 1500 m, Chloe Farrell long jump u15, Conor Giles Doran u 18 triple jump, Orlaith O'Brien u 16 shot putt, Niall Murphy u 18 triple jump, Darren Coleman hurdles u 17 Siobhan Whelan 60 metres u 19, Mollie Hutchinson u 15 shot putt, bronze medal winners were Tom Gallagher u 14 high jump and hurdles, Sinead O'Regan u 15 long jump,Danielle Widger u 15 shot putt, Sean Whittle u 19 high jump. Waterford AC had a win with Emma Caulfield u 14 walk, silver medal winners were Ruth Heery u 15 walk, Hannah Jacob u16 walk and bronze medal winners were Hannah Cawley u 16 walk , Grace Furlong u 17 high jump, Lance Baylon u 15 60 metres and Orla O'Connor u 15 walk and James Murphy u 15 high jump and long jump. For Tramore AC Shane Monagle was third in the hurdles under 15 and Robyn Jones 4th in the girls under 17 200 metres

British under 20 Indoor Championships

Four athletes from Ferrybank AC travelled over to Sheffield last week end for British under 20 Indoor Championships. On Saturday Paul Murphy competed in the 400 metres where in round one he was second in 50.74 seconds which got him through to the semi final where he finished third in 50.33 but missed out a final place. On Sunday Niamh Mc Nicol made it through to the 200 metres final where she finished 5 th in 25.47. seconds she had finished 2 nd in her heat in 24.95 and third in her semi final in 25.09, Neasa Murphy was 6 th of 12 in the high jump with 1.69 metres and Aisling Quinn was also 6 th in the 1500 metres in 4 minutes 55.23 seconds. For all four it was a great experience which should stand to them in the future.

Kelly's double

At the Grand Prix meeting in Athlone on Wednesday last in front of a packed crowd Kelly Proper was in fine form once again and had two victories, She won the

long jump with a distance of 6.49 metres a seasons best and a new stadium record beating her own record set last week and she also won the 60 metres in a personal best time of 7.44 seconds. Niall Tuohy ran a superb race in the 800 metres to finish second in a time of 1 minute 50.48 seconds being just inches behind the winner Karl Griffin UCD while In the high jump Sorcha Murphy was 3 rd with 1.65 metres, David Mc Carthy did not compete in the mile he had run in a 3000 metres race on Tuesday in Prague.The Olympic decathlon gold medalist and world champion, Ashton Eaton, USA won the 60 m in a new stadium record with a time of 6:69

Saturdays fixture in Cork

The All Ireland Schools and Inter Varsity Cross Country championships are in Cork IT on Saturday and Andrew Connick WIT will be a strong fancy for the University title. Waterford Schools will also be represented in the Schools fixture.
