The first Donal O' Connor Memorial Cycle

The first Donal O' Connor Memorial Cycle was launched by Mayor Cllr Jim D'Arcy and will be held on Saturday 8th September to help create awareness of World Suicide Prevention Day and to raise much-needed funds for Waterford Marine Search & Rescue. The 10k family friendly cycle will take place at 11.30 am (registration 10.30am) from the Kingfisher Club to Tramore GAA with entertainment and refreshments afterwards at Tramore GAA Club. Participation costs €10 per adult, €5 per child or €20 per family. The beneficiary of the Donal O'Connor Memorial Cycle, Waterford Marine Search and Rescue, is a voluntary group who patrol the waterways of Waterford City, saving lives and preventing suicides. The ongoing selfless work of the volunteers helps to allow people to return home safely to their families – people who might otherwise have been lost, leaving heartbroken families behind them.

At the preliminary launch of the cycle Mayor Cllr Jim D'Arcy said he was proud to say Waterford was unique in being the only city in Ireland to have its own integrated action plan for suicide prevention. The action plan is named "Reflecting the Challenge" and has been in place since 2008. The plan was developed after several years of consultation and communication amongst key organisations in the city about a way to respond strategically to the complex issues around suicide. Suicide is a tragedy for the individual and brings devastation to the families and communities left behind. Anything that can be done to prevent this final and irreversible act is to be welcomed, supported and promoted at every opportunity. It might not sound like earth shattering news but if it does happen then it could be one of the most significant things that this Government has done since it took office. Any money that is given over to education is a …
