McCarthy’s brilliant mile win in USA

For the second week in succession David McCarthy, West Waterford AC was in the winner's enclosure in the USA and this time his win was exceptional. Competing in the Terrier Invitational indoor meeting in Boston University on Saturday last in the Mile event for Providence College he completely outclassed the opposition and in the process had a big personal best.Taking the lead in a very fast run race with two laps to go he won going away in a terrific time of 3 minutes 55.75 seconds which is a New England Collegiate Record and the fastest in the USA this season and two seconds faster than his previous best. He had almost three seconds to spare over Tim Ritchie who was second and in third place came Eamon Coghlan's son John who broke four minutes for the first time with 3 Minutes 59.32. Eamon and John Coghlan now become the first Irish father and son to break four minutes for the mile. Also in Boston Shane Quinn was 9 th in a 3000 Metres race in a good time of 8 minutes 06.73 seconds
Mairead's good USA performance
Mairead Murphy Ferrybank AC who is currently in the USA in Kansas State University for a year or so had a very good result in an Indoor Pentathlon event last week end her first such event for some tome. Finishing second overall in Ames, Iowa she had a total of 3898 points and was only just outside the long standing Irish record of 3909 set by Brid Golden Ferrybank in 1992, the event was won by another Kansas State athlete the National Champion Ryann Krais won with a points total of 4073
All Ireland Pentathlon Win
On Saturday last a number of athletes from Ferrybank AC competed in the All Ireland Juvenile Combined Events in Nenagh and two came home with medals. Anne Corcoran, won a very closely contested u 14 Pentathlon Championship with a total of points 2594, Cormac McCann was second in the u 15 section his total being 2295..
Course Records in John Treacy 10 Miles
Two new course records were set on Sunday last at the JohnTreacy 10 miles run in Dungarvan which had an entry of 1500. Sean Hehir, Rathfarnham was the overall winner in a keenly contested race in a course record of 49 minutes 25 Seconds, Paddy Hamilton Annadale was second in 49.47 and Gary O'Hanlon, Clonliffe Hrs was third in 49.49. Maria McCambridge, Letterkenny was first lady home again with a new course record time of 55.58, Lizzie Lee, Leevale was second in 57.29 and Jill Hodgins, Cork was third in 58.20. First man over 40 Declan Power, Clonliffe Hrs, o 45 Cathall O'Connell, St Finbarr's, o 50 Joe Casey, Rathfarnham, o 55 Joe Gough, West Waterford, o 60 Dan O'Connell, o 65 John Joe Cotter. Women o 35 Corina Walsh West Waterford, o 40 Angela McCann Clonmel, o 45 Mags Kirwan Bolger, o 50 Mary Sweeney, St Finbarr's, o 55 Ann Bolge, Sliabh Bhui Rovers Junior Liz Nolan, Waterford Teams Men Clonliffe Hrs, Women Eagle,Cork. John Treacy clocked 65 minutes.
Waterford Schools dominate East Munster's
In Carriganore, WIT Campus on Thursday last in brilliant conditions and over an excellent course the East Munster Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships were held with large entries in all events. Athletes from Waterford schools were in top form as they won six of the eight individual events including the winning of the four Girl's races, they also hand great results in the team sections. In the girls races the four Waterford winners were really impressive and these were Aoife Hamilton Mean Scoil S Nioclas An Rinn in the minor grade, Niamh Casey Mercy Convent Waterford in the junior, Aisling Quinn Ursuline Convent Waterford, Intermediate and Bronagh Kearns Abbey CC in the senior grade. In the boys junior race Tadg Brennan was far too good for the opposition and Eoin Browne Dungarvan CBS won a thrilling race with Hugh Morgan De La Salle second. Others to secure second placings were Jonathon Crowley De La Salle, Minor, Aine Kinsella, Abbey Senior, Krista Meade Ursuline Minor and third placings went to Onra Murray Ursuline, Senior, Sean Curran Dungarvan CBS, Intermediate, Miceal Power, St Augustine's Minor and Chloe Fennell, do Minor. Ursuline Convent won the Minor and Senior Girls Team awards and Dungarvan CBS won the Intermediate Team section
Anne Valley 5 Miles
Saturday February 11 th is the date this year for the Annual Anne Valley 5 Miles Run in the Dunhill Area.and it starts at 12 noon,the run will be preceded by a Walk at 10 am. Entries will be taken on the day from 9.30 am at Harney's in Dunhill. Full details on Anne Valley Website re online entries.

Paddy Byrne Winter league continues on Thursday evening at the RSC at 7pm, register at 6.15 pm as usual this is the second last leg of the event.
