Bumper Waterford crowds to support local entries at Goff Thyestes in Gowran
RACING fans and festival revellers from Waterford are getting ready to make the short trip to Kilkenny for the long-awaited Goffs Thyestes Chase at Gowran, an €80,000 race which sees Waterford trainer, John Kiely and his entry Head of the Posse bid for the laurels in the feature race. Racecourse Manager, Margaret Fogarty, said she looks forward to welcoming Waterford's eager racing public to the meeting, adding that several groups from the county are among those who have booked out hospitality facilities for the big meeting. But she said there will be plenty dining and bar facilities for all punters and is very happy with the speed at which this year's meeting has sold so far.
"Waterford racegoers have always been very good supporters of Gowran Park and we look forward to welcoming back our loyal supporters and those new to racing here. It's our biggest day of the year and this year's Thyestes meeting is extra special.
"Goffs' support for and sponsorship of our feature race, The Goffs Thyestes just after 3pm on race day, is a massive vote of confidence in Gowran Park and the long-term vision we have for this track, particularly in such a challenging economic climate.
It's a critical day for Gowran, Kilkenny and the wider South East economy, Ms Fogarty added."This meeting is also a huge boost to the local economy. It brings 6,5000 people to the meeting itself and many more visitors to Kilkenny and the wider South East, groups and individuals who stay in local hotels, eat out in restaurants and enjoy shopping and visitor attractions in the region.
Thyestes Day 2012 takes place on Thursday 26th January. The racecourse will open at 11am. Tickets are available at Gowran Park on the day, priced at €12 for adults, which includes a free race card and €10 for OAP/Students/Unemployed with ID.
