Waterford AC Half Marathon another huge success.

Over 2,200 competed in the New Ireland Assurance Waterford AC Half Marathon on Saturday last in excellent conditions It was a very competitive race up front and for the last four miles three runners were disputing it, last years winner Sergei Ciobanu Clonliffe Hrs, last years third placer Paddy Hamilton Slieve Guillion Runners Co Armagh and Tom Hayes from Kilkenny City Hrs. Eventually Hamilton proved the stronger to win in 66 minutes 26 seconds, Ciobanu was second in 66.34 and Hayes third in 66.43 .Olympian Maria Mc Cambridge Dundrum Sth Dublin was a very impressive winner of the ladies section in 77.45, Fiona Kehoe Kilmore Co Wexford was second in 81.16 and Jacqui Carthy from the same club was third in 81.40. The following were the age category winners. Ladies; F 35 Lisa Mc Sweeney St Michael's, F40 Ann Marie Holland Youghal, F45 Michelle Nolan do, F 50 Órla O'Rourke Ballymore /Cobh, F55 Siobhan Kennedy Focus on Fitness. Men; M40 Jeremy O'Donovan Eli Lilly, M45 Vivian Foley Eagle Cork, M50 James Sullivan Waterford, 55 PJ Guinan Waterford, M60 Eddy Walsh Tinryland.Carlow. The response to the event by the majority of those that took part was very positive . It was a very big Logistical undertaking and the organisers wish to thank people living around the course and motorists for their patience, those that were pacers, the Gardai ,Order of Malta and many organisations and individual volunteers who were involved on the day in stewarding, at water stations etc. a sincere thanks also to the main sponsor New Ireland Assurance, and also to Blue Wall. Munster X Country

A small number of athletes from Waterford AC, KCK and West Waterford competed in Beaufort County Kerry on Sunday last in the Munster Junior and Juvenile B Cross Country Championships which had big fields competing in all events. In the Junior Race Niall Blackwell West Waterford was second overall, with Hugo Blair Waterford third , and Waterford won the Club Award the other scorers being Conor Shiels 5, Fergus O'Brien 6. Waterford and Jamie McCarthy 7. KCK had one winner and that was Roisin Power in the under 9 race,they also had a number placed in the top twelve and these were Abi Ryan 7 th u 9, Helena Barry 7 th u 15 , Niamh Mc Grath 10 th u 9, Ciara Power 11 th u 13 and Aisling Power 12 th. u 15. For West Waterford AC Angelina Chizhikova was 6th u 13 and Sarah Nyan 11th u 15.

National Race Walking Championships

St Anne's Park in Raheny, Dublin is the venue on Saturday next for the National Race Walking Championships 30 km and 20 km for men and 20 km for Women,plus under age races. Waterford interest will be in the women's race with Kate Veale West Waterford a fancy, the fixture starts at 11 am.

European X Country Championships

In Samorin,Slovakia on Sunday next the European Junior, under 23 and senior X Country Championships will be decided and a number of Irish teams compete.,senior and junior men and women plus a few individual under 23 athletes, best prospect would appear to be Fionnula Mc Cormack in the senior race

Awards

This Wednesday at 12 noon the Irish Life Health 2017 Athletic Awards Ceremony will take place in The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Santry. Individual and clubs etc will be among the recipients as well as all of Fame Award. Full details on Athletic Ireland Website.

New Athletics Book

The Little Book of Irish Athletics will be launched in The Book Centre, Waterford on Friday next 8 December 2017 at 6.30 pm. Dermot Keyes is doing the launch and there is plenty of Waterford interest in the book. The author is Tom Hunt a native of Clonea living in Mullingar and uncle of the well known soccer brothers Noel and Stephen Hunt,all interested are welcome

Carriganore National Fixture.

The second big event locally in December is the All Ireland XCountry Championship fixture in The WIT Arena Carriganore on Sunday week December 17 th. Races for Novices u 11, 13, 15, 17, 19. Male and Female, with over 2,000 athletes.
