Film Screening: The Human Scale by Andreas Dalsgaard

Greyfriars Arts Centre, Waterford. Thursday 9th October 2017

In light of the proposed plans for a new cultural Quarter and plans for the development of the North Quays, the Waterford Council of Trade Unions will screen the acclaimed film on modern urban planning titled 'The Human Scale'

The film is based on the work of Jan Ghel, the Danish professor of urban planning, design and open space architecture.

For over forty years Ghel has been leading a revolution in urban planning that has transformed cities worldwide, including New York Times Square, Copenhagen and recently the earthquake-devastated Christ Church, New Zealand.

Ghel's solutions to the problems facing many cities worldwide are applicable to large and small cities. His solutions involve placing citizens at the centre of planning and development and promise a more humanistic dimension to cities where people are no longer displaced by traffic and cars but can live work and play in an intimate, lively safe space in a sustainable and healthy way.

The film by Documenterian Andreas Dalsgaard, is stunningly photographed and travels to cities around the world to explore Gehl's vision. His vision is being implemented across the planet in many cities, and leading to regeneration, massively increased visitor numbers as well as population growth and inward investment etc.

The Waterford Council of Trade Unions, one of our city's largest civil society organisations, has contributed many proposals to city development plans, as well as supporting residents and community organisations on planning issues, down the decades. This screening is part of our contribution to the consultation process and debate ahead of the Cultural Quarter proposals and North Quay's development.

The film offers new and interesting perspectives for citizens, community groups, public representatives, architecture and urban design students, as well as planners and city council officials, all of whom are cordially invited to attend.

The venue is Greyfrairs Arts Centre, Waterford.

Time 7.30 pm on Thusaday 9th. November.

Light refreshments will be available and there will be time for short discussion and contributions from the floor etc.

That so many people are waiting for treatment in one of the most developed economies in the world is truly frightening. Of course you can take into account the underfunding of the health sector during the economic downturn but it still wouldn't fully explain why so ma …
