Kerry made to work hard for win

The Waterford Minor Footballers travelled to the Kingdom last week for the Munster Minor Football semi-final and although beaten they came away with heads held high. This was a game where the pundits were giving the Deise very little chance against a Kerry outfit of which much is expected. That said Waterford while playing second fiddle for much of the game did have opportunities and belied their outsider tag with a determined display which saw the visitors make a real game of it. Kerry opened with the wind at their back but two points from Waterford's Conor Gleeson showed that this John Kiely outfit were certainly not going to be rolled over. The Kingdom, so called aristocrats of football got a huge breakthrough at midway of the half when the very impressive Jack Sauvage

Paul O'Brien steps down as Blues crash to Wexford

waterford united 0 - 1 Wexford youths

Waterford United's dismal season took another turn for the worse on Friday night last when they lost for a second time to Wexford Youths this season. The previous week they turned in a dreadful display away to Mervue United and supporters were hoping that the team would bounce back from that defeat but sadly this latest outing was every bit as bad. In fact in many ways it was even worse.

To date a total of nine goals have been scored by the current team and on this occasion they did not even trouble the visiting goalkeeper once. Were it not for some fine saves by Craig Hyland and an excellent display by central defender Gavin Kavanagh the final score could very easily have run into a

Blues Accept Manager's Resignation

As you'll have read elsewhere in this issue, Waterford United announced last Saturday that it had accepted the resignation of manager Paul O'Brien, tendered just prior to what was a disappointing and lacklustre defeat to Wexford Youths on Friday night. The resignation brought to an end almost two years at the helm for O'Brien, the highlight of which, without doubt, was the run to the play-offs last season, going so agonisingly close to promotion, but just coming up short at the final hurdle. All at the club wish to thank Paul for five years of hard work and dedication to the cause, as manager, first team coach, and in charge of the U20s, and wish him well whatever path his future career may take. The Blues also stated that they envisage a role for Paul within the

Top class show jumping at Sunday' s Aglish Gymkhana

A host of Ireland' s top show jumping horses and riders will descend on the West Waterford village of Aglish this Sunday, as the annual Aglish Charity Gymkhana takes place. Always one of the highlights on the equestrian calendar, the Aglish Gymkhana was named National Show of the Year in 2010 and Waterford/Tipperary show of the year in 2012.

The highlight in the main arena will be the second round of the Connolly' s RED MILLS Munster Grand Prix League with €2,000 up for grabs. Tadgh Beecher from Tallow, Co. Waterford riding Loughnatusa Blakeney claimed the opening round of the league at Ballylawn, and he will be among the favourites to lift the trophy at Aglish, but with three Waterford riders at the top of the standings last time out, Beecher is just

Pillar-to-Post win for Gymstar Jumbo

Last Saturday night' s card showcased the semi-finals of the O Mahony Family, Portlaw A4 event, the final of a Novice marathon stake plus the semi-finals of the Remember Billy Ryan and John Davis A2 event.

The Tommy Mahoney owned Gymstar Jumbo (Crash-Ma Ma Blue) was dispatched as the 4/5 market leader to capture the marathon decider and the Model County dog did not disappoint leading all the way from trap five in a smart 40.72. Coming away in front ' Gymstar' never saw another rival as he kicked clear of Brunswick Reg. Despite staying wide on the bends ' Gymstar' freewheeled to a six lengths success over a running on Pronto Aideen.

Bowling Mackle and Coppinger impress at Fenor with superb bowling display

Wednesday, 15th May 2013

By Gene Hourihan

Fenor road bowling followers were treated to an awesome display by two of the top exponents of the game, Armagh' s Thomas Mackle and Cork' s Martin Coppinger on Sunday last. The two competitors graciously accepted the Waterford club' s open day invitation, to show case their skills and they certainly didn' t disappoint in this well anticipated exhibition score. With a stake of €2,300, the score started at the Church gate and after three good opening throws over the starting straight both players were virtually tied at the bottom of Sonny' s hill, a new record for this stretch of road. From there on it was neck and neck, with both players giving it their all up Sonny' s hill and reaching Currans in another two throws.

Local bowlers noted with interest the two competitors approach to the

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
