Following the success of the recent Waterford Viking Marathon many people are already planning for next year, some may even be planning for a tilt at a Marathon World Record, albeit a wacky one. In the 2011 London Marathon 35 wacky World records were set including a rather bizarre one for most Rubik cubes solved whilst running a marathon.

Many of the records however were set in the 'Dressed up category' which included:

Dressed as a gingerbread man - 3h 42m 20s

Dressed as an astronaut - 3h 53m 21s

Dressed as a nun - 4h 00m 28s

Dressed in a wedding dress - 4h 11m 01s

The one to aim for in Waterford in 2013 is surely the World Record for 'dressed as a viking'. But you better get training, in full Viking dress of course, as the current record stands at 3hours and 12minutes.

Sugar Rush

We're not sure if there's any World Records for best marathon supporters but our award goes to the young girls who set up the 'Sugar Boost' station outside their house at around mile 12. They had all manner of sugary sweets and treats to help us on our way. Looking forward to stopping by again next year.

The Island Run

The Island Run, sponsored by Ardkeen Quality Food Store, takes place on Sunday August 19th. This unique 5k run is now in it's 4th year and promises to be a great event again in 2012. Once you've worked up a sweat, and an appetite, with the challenging 5km run you can then enjoy the Waterford Castle family fun day with live music, kids entertainment and the famous BBQ on the lawn.

Entries for The Island Run open from July 17th at Ardkeen Quality Food Store or online at http://www.runireland.com. Check the Balance fitness facebook page for more details.

Quick Pick - Watermelon

A full Watermelon is a bit tricky when it comes to a quick snack but when it's available in this ready to eat quarter size it's a lot more manageable. Watermelon is a great immune booster as it is rich in vitamins including vitamin A, B6 and viatmin C. It's also a good source of Potassium and at this time of the year is at its refreshing best. In fact Watermelon is over 90% water so it's a great thirst quencher and can help rehydrate post exercise and training. Watermelon Quarter, €1 Bernards fruit & veg Ardkeen.

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
