Your fitness matters
viking marathon
There's about 8 weeks to go to Waterford's inaugural marathon and if the amount of people on the roads is anything to go by then there's a lot of people putting in the miles in preparation. To fine tune your preparation we are starting a weekly training session on the track at the RSC, Thursdays 6.30pm - 7.30pm. This session is suitable for those who want to improve their speed and stamina and running technique either for the full marathon or the half marathon. Structured track sessions are a great addition to any marathon training plan and can make a big difference to your performance on the day. If you are planning the Viking Marathon then this weekly training session could really make the difference. The Thursday group starts this week, May 3rd. You can call 087 786 4013 to book your place.
Back Road Business
With Marathon fever hotting up the main roads are filling up. It's great then to have many back road options to get away from it all. One of our favourites is out past Ballygunner in the Knockboy area. It's a quiet country road near the back of Kennedys pub in Callaghan which gently winds it's way through beautiful countryside all the way up to a majestic view over Belle Lake. On this occasion we didn't see man or machine in the hours run. Running relaxation doesn't get much better.
Start The Day The Flahavans Way
We are often asked whether porridge is the best breakfast to have. It's not the be all and end all but there's no doubt that porridge is a sound breakfast option. A visit to the Flahavans website gives the facts to back it up. Porridge is a good source of fibre and protein and helps stabilize blood sugar levels. It also helps aid digestion and can help reduce cholesterol. It even helps the brain produce serotonin which helps keep our spirits up and our appetites down. The humble bowl many of us make at home is often sustenance over style however, but porridge perfection is not far away. The steaming bowl with honey and cream on offer at Berfranks on The Quay is as stylish as porridge gets and with the recent cold snap of weather we've been having it really is the perfect way to start the day. €3.95 Berfranks 86 The Quay.
Deal Or No Deal
On the other side of the 'perfect way to the start the day' is the mighty 'Mammoth breakfast' which we spotted on the menu at a back street cafe on a recent visit to Cardiff. 8 bacon, 8 sausage, 8 hash browns, 6 eggs, 5 black pudding, 4 burgers, 4 omelettes, and the list went on and on right down to 8 toast and a pot of tea. Clean your plate and the mammoth breakfast is on the house. Meanwhile you're left feeling the size of a house. Best to stick with the porridge. Check the Balance fitness facebook page for a photo of the Mammoth breakfast in all it's glory.

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
