Reasons for Hope

Wednesday, 1st February 2012

Biblical perspectives for living church and state there was a downturn in the industry in which I was working and the company I worked for was forced to lay off some of its staff. News of my redundancy came a few months before the arrival of our third child. It was a perplexing time but looking back the overwhelming impression is of a remarkable, almost inexplicable peace. I became very aware that God, who tells us not to worry, was able to provide all that we needed. After a number of months I found other work but subsequently experienced other short periods of unemployment.

For many people unemployment is difficult not only because of the financial implications but also because of the importance of work for our self-esteem. It is difficult because it brings so much uncertainty and entails major adjustments to our lives. Many in the Waterford area, and indeed all over the country, have heard this news in the last year and are trying to cope with these difficulties. How can those in such circumstances face the new year with confidence and hope?

Jesus told us not to worry. He pointed to the birds of the air and the flowers of the field as examples of the provision of God for his creation. "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows" (Matt 10:29-31).

It may be that you have heard these words but never experienced the reality that lies behind them. But those who have turned to Christ and see the depths of his love displayed on Calvary understand that He cares deeply about our whole lives. "He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?"(Rom.8:32). Trusting such a compassionate God brings a "peace which transcends all understanding" (Phil 4:7).

The Government parties as well as the main opposition party, Fianna Fail, are in favour of the Yes vote but so far little has reall …
