The decision by Diageo to replace the traditional Large Bottle of Guinness with non-returnable bottles is deemed to be the thin end of the wedge by Guinness drinkers in the South East.

One of the things that really makes Waterford and hinterland stand out is the presence of the Large Bottle of Stout in all licensed premises in the area.

One regular visitor to Waterford says he knows when he is in Waterford when he calls into a pub on the Quay and sees two or three men sitting at a table "surrounded by a forest of Large Bottles of Guinness."

Martin Colbert, Norriss's pub said he feels they will phase out the large bottle and it would be sadly missed by his many regulars.

Michael Fitzgerald, The Munster Bar and a member of the Vintners Association said that 49% of the Large Bottles were consumed in the South East and there wasn't much demand elsewhere in places like Dublin. He understood there may be a return to the old traditional style "squat" Large Bottle of Guinness.

He also said that it would now fall to the publicans to make arrangements to get rid of the non-returnable bottles. He felt it was a strategy perhaps to encourage drinkers to switch to pints of guinness.
