Thousands gather for Winterval's Opening

The festival launched last Friday evening, when over 5,000 people lined the streets to welcome Mayor Pat Nugent, Teresanne O'Reilly and Santa as they arrived to turn on the Christmas lights and officially launch Winterval 2017. The festival runs on selected dates up until the 23rd December and it's not to be missed.

Santa departed from his Kingdom to John Roberts Square on a vintage firetruck, accompanied by local firemen, he greeted the crowd and wonderful music from Tucan created an electric atmosphere throughout the city.

This year, Winterval announced over 20 new events, totaling over 45 events and attractions now dotted around the city. Over half of the exciting activities are free - as well as a range of ticketed events. Winterval 2017 will shine brighter than ever with fun for families, couples and groups of friends looking for the happiest of festive experiences.

There's also a new focus on after-dark activities centred around the newly developed Apple Market. The market has been transformed into a Winter Village packed full of festive lights, free live entertainment, snowball fights and a giant Christmas tree.

Santa's Kingdom is bigger than ever this year, a real treat for all the family with lots of arts and crafts including lego and letter writing station to keep the kids entertained while they wait to see the man himself. While en route to see Santa Claus, families will also be able to explore the enchanted streets of Ireland's oldest city.

Another stop on the Christmas adventure is Waterford Illuminates in Cathedral Square. The famous light show projects on to the Deanery Building where the Square bursts into life and light. This year, the show is better than ever thanks to a whole host of new features and 3D animation which transforms the area into a magical place of light and colour. The free show is definitely one of the not-to-be missed highlights of Winterval.

The Waterford Eye is set to be a big attraction at this years festival. It is a brilliant addition to the sky line of Waterford. The biggest Ferris wheel in Ireland is the perfect family activity and perfect for viewing the beautiful Christmas lights at a height. There's also VIP packages available with blankets and prosecco or non-alcoholic fizz for the kids.

Winterval also launches the Winterval app this year which will give users an easy guide to all activities. The app will filter between free events, family activities and Google enabled maps. The app is available to download on Android now and the IOS app will be available shortly.

There's so much to see and do for everyone at Winterval. Booking tickets in advance is highly recommended so weekends can be spent exploring this interactive medieval city is highly recommended. Tickets can be purchased through the Winterval app too.
