The 'Country Girls' are back
Wednesday, 16th May 2012

For one week only at Garter Lane, following its sell-out run in 2011, prior to a national tour.
Red Kettle and Garter Lane are delighted to announce the revival of their co-production of Edna O'Brien's The Country Girls. The play was a runaway success for them in 2011, breaking box office records in Garter Lane with a three-week sell-out run and playing to packed houses and rapturous applause in Dublin's Gaiety Theatre.
The Country Girls will play for one week at Garter Lane before embarking on a national tour that will include performances at The Gaiety, Cork Opera House, Galway, Ennis, Sligo and Athlone. This production has been a real success story for a Waterford company in times of adversity, and this run will give the country an opportunity to see what Waterford has to offer and a second chance for local audiences who missed it first time round.
The Country Girls thrilled audiences and critics alike last Autumn, when the Sunday Independent called the show "a real triumph for Red Kettle" and noted theatre critic Liam Murphy spoke of "a great play by a great writer".
"We are delighted to be able to bring back The Country Girls for another outing at Garter Lane and the Gaiety", says Ben Hennessy, Artistic Director of Red Kettle, "the play has proven to be one of the most popular we have ever produced and one of the most creatively satisfying to work on. When we played at Garter Lane last year all tickets sold out with over a week left of the run and working with the great Edna O'Brien and Director Mikel Murfi in bringing The Country Girls to life was one of those experiences that re-invigorated our enthusiasm for making theatre in the first place. We're delighted too that due to the audience's response we have been invited back to the Gaiety."
Hennessy's excitement at bringing this production on the road is clear, and his ambitious plans for Red Kettle continue unabated. "We are already making plans to do a more extensive tour next year! Edna's amazing popularity and the quality of the production makes this one of those not-to-be-missed events...It is great too, in these economically tough times, to be able to offer our wonderful cast and crew another period of employment and of course provide our ever supportive audiences here at home, a great night at the theatre."
The Country Girls is at Garter Lane from Monday May 21st to Saturday May 26th with a special advance preview on May 19th.

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
