King Kong Company To Destroy Dancefloors (Again!)

A year ago King Kong Company set themselves the task of releasing one music video per month for an entire year. Few thought they would do it - and some of those were even in the band! But having released 12 music videos through Youtube and Facebook the band have built themselves a cult following, racked up nearly 25,000 views on Youtube, Facebook fans across Ireland, the UK and Europe, and not to mention beating Villagers, Lisa Hannigan, Ham Sandwich and 40 other bands to win the much coveted Viewers’ Choice award at the Irish Music TV awards last November. And now they play a one off live show at The Forum Waterford, this Saturday February 4th, doors 11pm and tickets cost e10.

The last year may have been one of great achievements for the band, but it only tells one half of the story.

King Kong Company didn't start out in 2011, or 2010 for that matter - they go way back. You will have to wind back the clock to August 1996 to when the band first took to the stage (coincidentally also at The Forum for the Spraoi Festival Club). If you’re of a certain age you will remember how they sold out every show they performed in Garter Lane over a 5 year period, how they rang in the Millennium in front of 30,000 people on the Quays, when they supported Underworld at Homelands and when they played the last night of The Roxy before calling it a day themselves in 2001. So what to expect from King Kong Company live in 2012? Just like the old days, it's going to be a late show. The guys specialise in making music for dancefloors - as can be seen with IPOP, Damn You Dorothy, Dr Whom, Zoids and I Said Posse. Over the last year they have displayed a slightly different side to the band, one thats more laid back. Just check out Uncle Trouble or Cannibal Country for that, but don't expect these tracks to be played note for note as they are in the videos - this is a club show afterall. Expect plenty of visuals and references to the many characters that have appeared over the last year. This can also be seen in the latest video for Eamon Devalero which brings all these characters back to the location of the very first video, Dr. Whom, as a kind of last hurrah.

This is going to be one of the gigs of the year, you can check out what all the fuss is about, get all their videos and MP3's by logging onto Facebook. com/KingKongCompany. See you on February 4th! Tickets on sale on the door and in advance from The Forum Box Office, The Glen, Waterford, or by calling 051 87 1111.

  • Who do you trust?

The news that the Yes side in favour of the Fiscal Referendum have seized the momentum with the majority of Irish voters is just an indication of how the debate over this issue is beginning to shape up. That Declan Ganly has weighed in on the side of the No vote also shows that there is still a lot to play for until the Irish electorate give the final decision later on this month. The Government parties as well as the main opposition party, Fianna Fail, are in favour of the Yes vote but so far little has reall …
