THE CURE and THE SMITHS

Wednesday, 1st February 2012

If you are a fan of alternative music from the 80s/90s, put Saturday, 11th February, in your diary as  The Forum hosts a fantastic double-bill of live tributes to THE CURE (Fire In Cairo) and THE SMITHS (These Charming Men). The night is being presented by alternative 80s club-night, Gekko, with doors at 9pm and The Cure tribute on stage first at 9.30pm. The live tributes will be followed by a retro 80s/90s Gekko  DJ set with Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, Soft Cell, Pet Shop Boys, ABC, Blondie, Stone Roses, Oasis and many more in the mix. Out of all the bands that emerged in the immediate aftermath of punk rock in the late ’70s, The Cure were arguably the most interesting, enduring and popular. Now 5 Cure enthusiasts under the name "Fire In Cairo" are giving Irish Cure fans the chance to don some eyeliner, a brush of mascara and indulge in some sweet nostalgia!! Covering all classic Cure songs right from the debut release "3 Imaginary Boys", through the hairspray and glitter of the 80s era and right up to the bands position as 90s alternative pop darlings, you can expect a set-list including "Boys Don’t Cry", "A Forest", "The Lovecats", "Inbetween Days", "Close To Me", "Why Can’t I Be You", "Friday I’m In Love", "Lovesong", and many more fan favourites. These Charming Men return to Waterford on 11th Feb to make up for their cancelled December date (due to "Morrissey" being on crutches). Their tribute features fantastic performances of some of the best alternative rock songs ever written like "How Soon Is Now", "What Difference Does It Make", "Ask", "Panic", "Bigmouth Strikes Again", "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", "Shoplifters Of The World Unite" and of course "This Charming Man". Morrissey has said about them ""I’m very impressed and incredibly flattered by what they do". They headlined The Smiths convention in Los Angeles 4 years in a row and have toured the World over the last decade, including a headline appearance at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan in front of a crowd of 35,000.

  • Who do you trust?

The news that the Yes side in favour of the Fiscal Referendum have seized the momentum with the majority of Irish voters is just an indication of how the debate over this issue is beginning to shape up. That Declan Ganly has weighed in on the side of the No vote also shows that there is still a lot to play for until the Irish electorate give the final decision later on this month. The Government parties as well as the main opposition party, Fianna Fail, are in favour of the Yes vote but so far little has reall …
