Waterford City Pride of Place Environmental Competition 2012 launched

The Mayor of Waterford City, Councillor Pat Hayes will launch the 2012 Waterford City Pride of Place Environmental Competition on Thursday 26th April at Newtown Junior School, winner of Tidiest Primary School 2012.

Waterford City Council runs this competition annually to encourage communities, businesses and individuals to improve their local environment and what better time to launch it than April when everyone is beginning to carry out clean ups once again.

This competition is above all about commitment, contribution and a sense of identity. It is about generating a sense of pride in our own place – whether that place is our home, our community or our city as a whole. This awards scheme will reward individuals, communities, schools and businesses who strive to make this happen.

The competition includes the following categories:

• Best Residential Area - both large and small

• Garden Competition – both large and small gardens

• Tidiest School - primary and secondary schools

Application forms will be available from the 27th April on http://www.waterfordcity.ie and from Environmental Services at 849563 or their office at Menapia Building, The Mall, Waterford. The closing date for entries into this competition is Friday 25th May 2012. Judging will take place over the summer months, allowing progress to be monitored and efforts to be rewarded. An awards ceremony will be held in the autumn for all entrants in this competition.

And if you would like to hear about projects being carried out by Tidy Waterford (Waterford City's Tidy Towns group), why not go along to a public meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 2nd May in Greyfriars Gallery (off Cathedral Square). Tidy Waterford will be giving presentations on past, present and future projects that have been progressed as part of Tidy Waterford. Current projects include Community Gardens in Wyse Park and a pilot project on Michael Street. Anyone interested in hearing more about these initiatives, giving feedback or becoming involved in Tidy Waterford is welcome to attend the meeting.
