Unimpressed with government's handling of revenue letters
Wednesday, 18th January 2012
Dear Editor,
I am singularly unimpressed with the Government's new-year gift to 150,000 of our older citizens – a heavy handed and over-the-top tax warning.
It now appears that this demand applies appositely to only 2,000 of them.
What a clever use of public funds this was – 148,000 unnecessary letters, with the attendant secretarial expenses. Probability now is that the total cost of this fiasco will near €1m.
And our Government's response? Oh, just blame the civil servants – but, whatever you do, do not shoulder the blame yourself.
The government's watchword, though, is "fairness” – and to demonstrate this, they attempt to clobber the pensioners while they pay "salaries” to the boyos in NAMA.
Some fairness...some Government!
Yours etc.
