It seems that despite the near universal regard in which he is held Michael D. Higgins will have to go through the ropes and contest an election if he wishes to become the country's next President.

Although all the major political parties have said that they will come out and support him there are others in Dail Eireann who would rather see their own candidate take up the position in the Aras.

First and foremost amongst them are Sinn Fein, who probably realistically believe that they will never beat Michael D. Higgins, who will field their own candidate.

Even if they don't xwin they believe that it will make their party a stronger candidate down the road when it comes to other elections, most notably a general election whenever that might come. It is likely that some Independents in the Dail will support Sinn Fein.

Even if there is an election for the position most commentators believe that it is Michael D. Higgins to lose.
