President of the Chamber Paul McDaid commented, "In addition to increasing costs for water, commercial rates have been continually increased at levels that bear no relation to the rate of inflation. Commercial rates in Waterford City increased by 4% in 2008 and by 0.6% in 2009 while rates in Waterford County increased by 3% in 2008 and by 2.5% in 2009. Jailing debtors does not make sense – D\'Arcy
Jailing debtors does not make sense – D'Arcy

Cllr. Jim D'Arcy says that jailing people who don't pay fines or who default on debts makes no sense. He points to recent figures which show that over 2,000 people were imprisoned for non-payment of fines and debt defaulting in the first six months of 2009 and says that such a problem could be much more appropriately addressed by mechanisms such as attachment to earnings orders. "Jailing so many people for getting into financial trouble puts even greater pressure on an already overstretched prison service. It is, in my view, a blunt and thoughtless response to a problem that is affecting more and more people in the current economic climate." Cllr. D'Arcy believes that there needs to be a comprehensive overhaul of prison policy, beginning with a commitment to finding an alternative to jailing people for their inability to pay debts and fines.

The miracle painless wax treatment used by Hollywood stars, Lycon, has finally arrived in Waterford. Landing next to the Suir, exclusively at Ella's Tanning Studio on Grattan's Quay, Lycon wax is a revolutionary development in hair removal. As anyone who has endured a traditional wax will know, it hurts. This new strip-less treatment takes the pain out of hair removal and leaves the skin silky smooth.

Lycon waxes shrink-wrap and remove hair as short as 1mm and contain natural and soothing ingredients that nurture the skin, leaving it feeling soft. It is suitable for all skin types, even the most sensitive. "We are delighted to be the first salon to bring Lycon wax to Waterford. It may seem hard to believe but this wax really is painless. I actually had a customer fall asleep while I did her wax, how often do you think that happens?" laughed Ella Gora, proprietor of Ella's Tanning.

"Customers who have tried...

No guarantee link between public service pay and pensions will be retained
No guarantee link between public service pay and pensions will be retained

Waterford Labour Deputy Brian O'Shea has been informed by the Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan T.D. that the earnings link or "pay parity" basis for post-retirement increases, is a feature of Irish public services schemes.

In the Civil Service increases in pensions are awarded at the discretion of the Minister for Finance under Regulations made by him under Section 29 of the Pensions (Increase) Act 1964. The Act does not prescribe what form the increases should take or how they should be calculated.

A typical provision in a public service scheme would be that increases may be granted under the scheme as may be authorised from time to time by the Minister responsible, with the consent of the Minister for Finance.

The Minister concluded that as the Government has made clear on a number of occasions, all public expenditure, pay and non-pay, current and capital, is under review in the context of th...

Government digging in for long haul
Government digging in for long haul
The old adage that it never rains but it pours is borne out with the appalling trauma visited on various parts of the country suffering from unpredecented flooding in recent times. The Taoiseach and his Ministers already severely under pressure with the economic downturn is now under considerable strain dealing with the ongoing flooding crisis. The allocation of €10m. is just a provisional figure and no doubt that government expenditure will run into tens of millions of euro. The Taoiseach and his Minister for Environment, John Gormley have met the crisis head-on and have visited all the affected areas and met with representatives and people affected. The scale of the natural disaster is unprecedented in Irish history and one must feel empathy and sympathy for those whose lives and homes have been destroyed. Also the long term damage to the agricultural sector is too soon to evaluate.

However, with the successful passage ...

So says Colette Byrne, Director of Environmental Services in Waterford City Council, adding that the campaign will be focussing on both private and public property. There will be a number of ap...
