Sad passing of Carrick Triathlon Club\'s Barry McCarthy
Sad passing of Carrick Triathlon Club's Barry McCarthy

The biggest ever turnout of the Carrick Triathlon Club took place last Friday 16th October, but sadly it wasn't for a race or even an A.G.M. but for the removal of one of the founding members and past chairman of the club, Barry McCarthy.

Barry passed away peacefully on Thursday 15th October surrounded by his family. He had courageously battled against cancer for over 18 months but eventually it got the better of him.

Barry, along with his twin brother Garry, started the club over 18 years ago with the first Carrick Triathlon, consisting of about 20 competitors, taking place during the River Festival in Carrick on a sunny June bank holiday weekend. The following year a little over 30 competitors took part and before we knew it the Carrick race grew and grew into what it is today with over 400 taking part this year. Throughout these years, even though Barry didn't take part himself, he was always involved in...

Next Match
By the time you read this column, in all likelihood the Blues will have played their next match, which is against Mervue United on Tuesday (20th, KO 7.45pm), brought forward from the coming weekend due to the clash with the FAI Cup semi final at Sligo Rovers. The game has become must win if the Blues are to retain even a slight chance of making the play-off positions, so hopefully the result went our way. The next match after this will of course be the Cup game, and of course it has now become the biggest game of the season. Elsewhere in the issue you can read about how suspended and cup-tied players will make a difficult task even harder, but United have a great away record this season, especially in the Cup, and of course the last time they went to the Showgrounds for a Cup match they came away winners after a penalty shoot-out, in 2007.

Condolences
All at the...

Valuable points for Under 13s
Under 13 A: Bohs 2 Southend 3
Another valuable three points for Mickey and Matthew's side as we do the double over our great rivals. Like the game in Southend this was a close affair and after we missed a number of gilt edged chances particularly in the first half, we were at the end, glad to hear the final whistle.

After a good opening start from both sides, we eventually took the lead through a neat finish from the industrious Shane Mackey and then proceeded to miss a number of opportunities to increase our lead although it must be said that Josh Moore was very unlucky not to score just before half time with the ball just inches past the post.

It took us a while to get going in the second half and it took an absolute wonderful free kick from Dean O Halloran from all of forty yards to increase our lead, but we then went strangely quiet for awhile ...

Blues head to Sligo for FAI Cup

Last Friday in Jackman Park, Waterford lost 2-1 against Limerick in disappointing fashion. Vinny Sullivan put the Blues in front after 65 minutes but straight from the re-start Stephen O'Flynn equalised for the home side. It was a crazy goal to give away from a Waterford point of view. All season the Blues defence has been superb but lately they have been conceding silly goals and this was one of those woeful goals and it knocked them out of their stride completely.

Dave Warren who was playing in an unusual position for him then gave away a needless penalty when he pushed the former Carrick United player, Daryl Kavanagh on 81 minutes when the ball was going out over the endline for what would have been a kick out to Waterford. Stephen O'Flynn sent Michael Devine the wrong way from the 12 yard spot.

In their last three games, Stephen Henderson's m...

Munster Junior Cup
Lismore 0 Villa 3

We made the trip out west in the Munster Junior Cup and recorded a good 3-0 victory. Eoin Ginnety opened the scoring with a 30 yard strike. Danny Walsh added two more in the second half with assists from Conor McDonald and David Murphy.

Next Fixture : Our next Premier fixture is on Saturday away to Park Rangers in the FAI Junior Cup kick off 2pm.

Under 11 League: Tramore A 0 Villa A 3
We travelled to the seaside venue on Saturday last to play our fourth league game against Tramore. After an unusually sluggish start we eventually settled down to play our normal passing game. Our first goal came straight from the set-piece training manual when a corner from the right by Craig Dunphy received the deftest of headed touches by Dan Coad to place the ball just inside the far post. Goal number two arrived on the 20 minut...

Gunners take Cathedral Town
Gunners take Cathedral Town

Gunners take Cathedral Town Ballygunner and Lismore returned to Walsh Park on Saturday last for the replay of their Waterford Senior Hurling County Final and again, as in the drawn encounter, it must be said it was superb fare from start to finish. On the basis of scoring chances and possession, Lismore will probably bemoan the fact that they did not win on the first occasion but "the hard dog......." was in evidence as the Gunners, through the exploits of Paul Flynn, stayed in there and eked out a draw at the end. On their two previous final appearances it was Ballygunner who had the upper hand over Lismore but, this was a new day and a different occasion. Both teams have been complimenting their established stars with young talent that have come through the ranks and so for many players this second "bite of the apple" had given them valuable experience of the big occasion.

Gunners manager had made one change from tha...

East Under-13 Football Championship Semi Final

Gaultier 3-7 De La Salle 3-6

Our Under-13 footballers went down by the minimum margin when they lost to Gaultier in Tramore last Sunday morning. This was an excellent and thrilling game of football between two very good teams who took some fine scores and in the end it was our opponents, whose goalkeeper once again was outstanding, who finished on top.

Despite lining out without James Grogan, Luke Power, Dean W...

Spirited display from Under 15s
Our under 15 hurlers, while short of a few regulars, produced a spirited display despite losing against Scared Heart on Friday afternoon. The younger lads produced some outstanding displays, with Jeff Lawless, Cian Mac, Shane Morrissey and John Ahern leading the way.

Under 16 Football
Our U 16 footballers crashed out of the county championships last Saturday against Bricky Rangers in Kilmacthomas at semi final stage. After playing some great football in the last few weeks the slip lads produced their worst performance of the year and lost this match by half time. It was a disappointing end for a team that was shaping up nicely.

Benefit Night
Ferrybank GAA club will hold a night at the dogs on Saturday 31st Oct at 8pm. Tickets are now on sale at £10 euro's, we would urge all players, members, and parents of...

Luck Eludes Superb Young Wildcats
Bausch & Lomb Wildcats 57 Dublin Meteors 65

Wildcats started with flair, passion and superb finishing that belied expectations that this young team had little or no hope of getting a win all season. Such was the quality of their fast breaking game that they had won over the home support midway through the 1st quarter. Supporters greeted every score with a tremendous roar that inspired the team to a 22-14 lead at the end of the opening quarter. One major reason why Wildcats were coasting in top gear was the magnificent performance of Sinead Deegan, who at just 17 years of age, (in the opinion of this biased reporter), is the best point guard on this fair isle. The Mercy Leaving Cert student finished the quarter on 9 points and assisted in very other score Wildcats registered.
