The aftermath of Barack Obama's stupendous victory in the American election is still reverberating throughout the world. The emphatic nature of his victory demonstrated that his political reach stretched across the cultural and ethnic divisions that for so long have riven American politics. It must be said that the gracious manner in which his victory was acknowledged by his Republican opponent John McCain did create a very favourable impression and reflects well on him.

The sweeping nature of the Democratic victory will enable them to achieve real change in American Society, but more importantly, from a world perspective will bring about a much needed change in American foreign policy. I organised a recent conference in Brussels on how best can Ireland drawdown funding and maximise opportunities that are available under the 7th EU Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) 2007 - 2013.

There is 52 billion Euro available under this programme and it is the stated objective of the Irish Government to seek to drawdown over 600 million Euro of this fund over the next five years. Irish companies have already drawdown over 80 million Euro to financially support 350 projects since the start of 2007.

Keynote speakers at this conference included Hans Gert Pottering, the President of the European Parliament, Janez Potocnik, the EU Commissioner for Science and Research and Dr Jimmy Devins TD, the Irish Minister for Science and Innovation and representatives from Enterprise Ireland.
