Waterford Stanley make generous donations to local charities

Waterford Branch of the Dyslexia Association of Ireland
The Dyslexia Association of Ireland was established in 1972 to promote awareness of Dyslexia and to serve the needs of all with this disability. The association provides support to 2,500 families nationally and up to recently there were 31 local branches in Ireland. However, now with the addition of the Waterford Branch, which is now up and running, it brings the number of branches to 32. Having the local branch means that families will now have local support, advice and out of school workshops for children. These workshops will take place here in Waterford thus avoiding a journey to Wexford or Cork which so many families have had to make up to this point.

Do you suspect your child may have reading and writing difficulties? Is your child struggling in school?
If the answer to either of these questions is yes then please come along to a information update meeting in the Tower Hotel on Wednesday 21st October 2009 at 7.30pm (cost 5 euro to cover costs).

Rosie Bissett, Director of the Dyslexia Association of Ireland and Sue Goona - Parent, will be speaking on the night.

Comeragh active retirement
Next meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 14, at 2.00 pm at Woodlands Hotel. Margaret Power of Abbey Gardens will be our Guest and she will demonstrate growing plants by division. Please bring the bus fare for Cork Trip (twenty Euro) to the next meeting (14 October).

Waterford Oxfam shops call for donations for Oxfam
Waterford Oxfam shops have called for donations for over 20 million people across East Africa who are facing critical shortages of food and water following successive years of failed rains and worsening drought. Irish aid agency Oxfam Ireland has launched a public appeal to help alleviate the emergency.

In East Africa, already affected by chronic poverty and skyrocketing food prices, climate change is also having a dramatic impact as frequent and severe droughts exacerbate this critical situation.

The Taoiseach and other world leaders, including Barack Obama and Gordon Brown recently met in New York for a high level UN meeting on climate change. "While world leaders like Gordon Brown and Brian Cowen finally wake up to the danger of climate change, people in East Africa are already waking up to drought and food shortages exacerbated by climate change" said Jim Clarken, Oxfam Ireland's Chief Executive.

"Over 2 million people across large parts of Northern and North-Eastern Uganda are suffering from severe food shortages following short and erratic rainfall this year, while in Tanzania, 3 successive years of failed rains mean that many thousands are in dire need of assistance", added Clarken.

The East African food crisis is compounded by a number of factors. The weather is becoming increasingly unpredictable, with longer dry spells with short, intense rains that can lead to severe flooding and landslides. The highly inflated price of staple foods and cereals remains unaffordable to many families and the cost of water is also rising. People are forced to sell their assets, such as livestock, alleviating short term hunger but exacerbating long-term problems.

Rural areas, which have suffered decades of neglect and under-development are most affected with pastoralists particularly at risk. These are areas with little access to education, healthcare, water and sanitation - making them even more vulnerable.

Oxfam is there and is making a difference - but public donations are now needed urgently to continue the good work as Oxfam provides livelihoods support, supporting agricultural production and working with pastoralists on animal health and grain banking programmes, as well as water and sanitation. Oxfam also lobbies and supports local authorities to improve drought mitigation planning.

You can donate to Oxfam Ireland's East African Food Crisis Appeal by calling 1850 30 40 55, visiting your Oxfam shop, or via the website at www.oxfamireland.org
