"Urbs Intacta Manet" PDF Print E-mail

Due to popular demand, Bowler Hat Theatre Company is to stage the hugely popular "Urbs Intacta Manet" with Jamie Murphy and Michael Quinlan for the last time. For those of you who missed it first time around, ‘Urbs’ is a (tragic) comedy which tells the story of Jimmy and Ted, whose mutual best friend Angus has been killed in a car crash. Jimmy copes with his grief by stealing the coffin from the Church of the Holy Family the night before the burial, and the story then is really about how these two narcotic loving friends deal with the tragedy (and of course how to get the coffin back to the church..!!).

urbs.jpg It is not, however, the popularity of the show the last time that is the motivation behind staging this play again. It is due to the fact that after the success of ‘Urbs’, the playwright, Pat Daly, wrote a follow up specifically for the two characters called ‘Waiting for Betty’. This is set 12 months after the death of Angus, and is set in Ardkeen, where Ted has been in for surgery. In ‘Betty’ we see the two lads again put in a difficult situation (this time Ted’s condition), and we see if they have grown up at all, how their inevitably messed up love lives are, and finally get to hear how they got the coffin back to the church..!! And all while ‘Waiting for Betty’.

Directed by Michael Power, this show will not be staged again by Bowler Hat so it’s your last chance to see it! Tickets are on sale now from Garter Lane, four nights only, July 10th /11th/12th and 13th.
