East U-21 Hurling Championship Semi Final

De La Salle 3-11 Ballygunner 1-9
Our U-21 hurlers qualified for the Eastern final with an excellent hard earned victory over Ballygunner in Portlaw last Sunday. This was a tough contest between two sides who have been involved in some fine games over the years and it has to be said we deserved our victory, with our ability to get goals at vital times proving decisive.

Most of the plaudits will go to our backline, led by Kevin Moran, who restricted our opponents to one point from play during the game but in attack Seamus Richardson, more noted as a defender, proved the unlikely hero scoring 2-1. After the huge disappointment of losing last year's county final by the narrowest margin it was good to get a win under our belts. It was also good to see Eddie Barrett make a welcome return in the last quarter after a serious knee injury had kept him out for the last four months.

Kevin Moran and Dean Twomey opened the scoring with two frees after fouls on Eoin Casey and Seamus Richardson. Ballygunner equalised from a sideline and a free after seven minutes. We struck the first major blow in the eight minute when Jason Foran showed his speed to race through and crash the ball to the net for an excellent goal. Ballygunner pointed a minute later and there was no further scoring until the 18th minute when they reduced the lead to the minimum.

We stretched our lead with points by Stephen Power and Dean Twomey from a free, after a foul on himself before Seamus Richardson scored a goal of real quality in the 21st minute. We now led 2-4 to 0-4 but Ballyguner came back and John Coady was forced to make a fine save before two more frees from Dean Twomey, after fouls on Stephen Daniels and David Greene, stretched our lead. Ballygunner pointed another sideline cut before David Greene had the final say on the stroke of half time with a point to leave us ahead 2-7 to 0-5.

The second half began with little open play but Ballygunner were right back in it after six minutes when they were awarded a free and they goaled from it. A point from Stephen Power two minutes later had us six clear. Amazingly there was no further score until the 16th minute when Ballygunner pointed another free. Oran Keevers responded to this with a super run and score in the 19th minute.

Ballygunner pointed in the 20th minute but a minute later David Greene broke through and shot for goal. His shot was parried by the keeper and Seamus Richardson was on hand to boot the ball to the net. Ballygunner replied with a point from play but a long range strike form Dean Twomey and one from Seamus Richardson stretched our lead. Ballygunner ended the scoring in injury time when a free went over the bar.

Scorers: S. Richardson 2-1, D. Twomey 0-5 (0-4 frees), J. Foran 1-0, Stephen Power 0-2, K. Moran (free), D. Greene and O. Keevers 0-1each.

City League U-12 Hurling Semi Final

Passage 3-4 De La Salle 0-10
The old saying that goals win matches proved true for our unlucky U-12 hurlers who went down to Passage in the semi final last week in Gracedieu. This was an entertaining game between two battling teams with some very good hurlers on both sides, but goals from long range frees at the start and end of the game proved decisive for Passage. We got off to a bad start with a goal for Passage in the third minute when a free from halfway went through a forest of players to the net. A minute later Dean O'Halloran pointed a '65 and in the seventh minute he pointed a free after a foul on Shane Ryan. Passage came back with a point in the eleventh minute and three minutes later they found the net with a cracking shot. Dean O'Halloran pointed a free after a foul on himself in the 15th minute and three minutes later Shane Ryan scored an excellent point. Just before half time Dean O'Halloran pointed a '65 after James Grogan's shot was deflected outside and we trailed 2-1 to 0-5 a the break. A point by Dean O'Halloran in the second minute saw us trail by the minimum but Passage responded immediately with a pointed free. We were then awarded a free. However, Dean O'Halloran's shot was saved, but he pointed the resultant '65. Jamie Roche, now operating in the forwards, pointed in the fifth minute and the sides were level 0-8 to 2-2. Passage rallied again and pointed a free in the seventh minute and a '65 in the twelfth minute to regain the lead. We were unlucky in the 15th minute when Shane Ryan broke through but his shot was brilliantly saved by the Passage keeper. With two minutes of normal time left Dean O'Halloran reduced the gap to the minimum before a Passage free out by the sideline found it's way to the back of the net for the decisive score. Credit to our lads they battled on and Dean O'Halloran had two shots go narrowly wide before he ended the scoring with a point.

Scorers: D. O'Halloran 0-8 (0-2 frees, 0-3 '65s), S. Ryan and J. Roche0-1 each.

Panel: Lee Wall, Evan Deegan, Jamie Roche, David Hogan, Luke Power, Jack McCarthy, Adam Doyle, Brian Cunningham, Dean Walsh, Shane Ryan, Aidan Lawless, Dean O'Halloran, Eddie Meaney, Michael Roche, James Grogan, Jack Maher, Shane Coady, James Coad, Jack Rea, Conor Dalton, Shane Crowe, Dean Fitzgerald, Sean Whittle, Ryan O'Higgins, Conor Hogan, Aaron Wickham, Jack Laffan.

Under-13 Football
Our Under-13s started the football campaign with an impressive win over Sacred Heart, Playing into a strong breeze in the first half we went in at half time leading by 4 points, but it was still anyones game. However we had the breeze in the second half and our forwards took full advantage of it, rounding up a final scoreline of 8-9 to 2-2 . Lets hope we can produce the same football again next weekend, and get 2 more points

U-11 Football

De La Salle 3-5 The Nire 2-5
We went to Tramore on Sunday last with our Under-11 team, to begin the challenge of retaining the all County football league, which we won last year. Some members of that team are again involved this season and we knew we'd need their experience against The Nire, who will always have a well drilled football team. We began very well with our defence very much on top and delivering very good ball into our forwards. This culminated in two very well taken

points from Robert Ryan, which were followed by two good goals, firstly from poacher supreme Eddie Meaney, and then by the hard working midfielder, David Hogan. With Ryan O'Higgins winning a lot of possession on the forty and Jamie Regan covering a lot of ground in defence, we went in at half time leading comfortably. Unfortunately, the loss of Jack Walsh through injury at the short whistle was a blow, as he was dominating his marker, and let's hope he makes a speedy recovery. The opposition improved greatly on the turn around and made life very difficult for our young guns. But with hard work from Cormac McCann, Lee Wall, Ben Fitzgerald and a well taken goal from Tommy Crotty (not sure how his Dad would feel about that, as he is an ex Nire man?) we held on for a deserved win. Next match this Sunday, further details in sports section.
