National Broadband Scheme Key to Regional Development says Chamber

Waterford Chamber of Commerce has highlighted the National Broadband Scheme as a key element in supporting regional development in the South East region. The National Broadband Scheme currently being rolled out by 3 will provide much needed broadband connectivity to the remaining 10% of the population across rural Ireland who remain unconnected.

"The National Broadband Scheme will bring considerable benefits to businesses and communities in Waterford and across the South East region. The Chamber is confident that new employment will be created, while sustaining jobs already in this sector. Access to high-speed and high-capacity broadband services will also mean that more people in the county can run businesses from home and telework.

During these uncertain times, teleworking can be an attractive option for both business owners and their employees. It can reduce energy, travel and other overhead costs for businesses," said Michael Garland, CEO of Waterford Chamber.

Waterford Chamber, which has played a strong role in making the case for broadband in the South East region, firmly believes that broadband can support the viability and competitiveness of existing jobs and remove a major barrier to attracting new investment and jobs to the county.

Broadband accessibility is one of the important items on the checklist for potential multinationals when they consider potential locations for their business, their employees have to have access to broadband in the rural areas and in many cases this is a prerequisite.

Michael Garland continued, "For the last number of years, Waterford Chamber has emphasised the importance of broadband, so the National Broadband Scheme provided by 3 is a significantly positive step in the right direction in supporting the local economy. SME's and rural enterprises across Waterford can now target international markets and compete with businesses in urban areas that, up to now, have had a distinct competitive advantage."

As part of the National Broadband Scheme rollout in Waterford and across the South East region, 3 is deploying cutting edge wireless technology, combining the best of fixed line broadband connectivity with the flexibility of a mobile device.

This connectivity will enable businesses in the NBS coverage areas across the 31 electoral divisions in Waterford to make the most of high-speed internet, email and additional services, opening up local and global markets and potentially improving efficiencies and revenues.

"It is the strong view of the Chamber and our partners in the South East, that broadband connectivity is a basic right that will ensure the future sustained viability to the most rural areas. During Enterprise Week, we have been working with local businesses and entrepreneurs to highlight the tools they need, and it is our belief that the National Broadband Scheme is a significant boost for local communities across the county. It will support many small businesses/enterprises to increase their competitiveness in these tough economic times," concluded Mr Garland.
