  • Illegal burning

    Wednesday, 31st August 2011

Did you know that it is illegal to burn household waste, even garden waste such as tree cuttings?

It is prohibited to burn household waste in either a building or garden. Waste burners (also known as a household incinerator) are also illegal, regardless of whether they are attached to a flue or chimney or contained within a building. Only specially licensed facilities are exempt from these regulations.

Waste generated by agricultural practices (e.g. wood, brush, etc.) can only be burned as a last resort. Farmers should first try to find ways to reduce, reuse or recycle the material. For example, it may be possible to shred the waste and use it as compost. Alternatively, the material might be useful as fuel. Also, the farmer must notify the relevant local authority in advance of his intention to burn the waste.

    People often ask why
