Help for homeowners who bought at peak - D'Arcy

The planned increase in mortgage interest relief for those who bought their first home during the peak of the property boom has been welcomed by Fine Gael city councillor, Jim D'Arcy. He says the increase will free up money for hard pressed families and hopefully help them to hold onto their homes. "Mortgage interest relief has been increased to 30% for people who bought between 2004 and 2008. They are among the biggest victims of the economic collapse, having paid hugely inflated prices in their efforts to put a roof over their families' heads. Many of them are now struggling to pay their mortgages and this budget measure will at least ease some of the pressure."

Carrying out work in property with neighbours

Of course we all know that the best way to deal with a neighbour when you are contemplating renovations, maintenance and or repairs to adjoining property is to discuss the matter with them and try attain their consent. However that is not always possible and the new Land and Conveyancing Reform Act 2009 covers a number of situations applicable to the land or property owner wishing to carry out work. It is hoped that the legislation will prove to be a new system for resolving neighbourly disputes.

A property owner is now entitled to carry out work to a party structure either where they have been served with a notice or order to carry out such work, or where they wish to develop under exempted development or where they have obtained planning permission to develop,

  • Strangebut - True!

    Wednesday, 14th December 2011

    Q. In Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol," Ebeneezer Scrooge is visited at night by the ghost of his late partner Jacob Marley but denies that he is actually seeing the ghost. When asked why he did not believe his senses, Scrooge replies, "Because a slight disorder of the stomach makes them cheats. You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato. There's more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are." Now to divert the specter's gaze from himself, Scrooge takes out an object to show Marley, declaring, "I have but to swallow this and be for the rest of my days persecuted by a legion of goblins, all of my own creation. Humbug, I tell you! Humbug!" What was this quite ordinary household object?

    Waterford News February 1946

    Declaration of independence

When monday, january 28th, 1946, comes to be referred to by the future historian, I think it should be known as "Waterford's Independence Day" writes a "News" Special Representative. I believe this should be so for a two-fold reason:

It marked the coming to the city of the "man of destiny" Eamon de Valera, to have conferred on him the honorary freedom of this ancient borough; and after An Taoiseach had added his signature to that illustrious roll, he chose the occasion to make one of the most important pronouncements of his patriotic career as Irish leader and gifted statesman.

"This," he declared at a banquet (given by Mayor Ald. Wm. Kenneally) in the Adelphi Hotel, following the freedom conferring ceremony, "is an independent sovereign State. We have our Constitution and our own Citizenship Law, and no

  • A Government Success

Once in a blue moon. As rare as hen's teeth. A Government success. Each of those three sentences are as unusual and as rare as each other. But the last one seems to be about to take place. The Government has announced that it plans to give each child in the State a second year of free pre-school. It might not sound like earth shattering news but if it does happen then it could be one of the most significant things that this Government has done since it took office. Any money that is given over to education is a …
