    SPEAKING to Waterford Today, Manager of Harveys, Mr Christy Leonard the final of Miss Waterford was a "fantastic night". The judges who had a tough time deciding on an overall winner were: Natalie O’Connor Sales Executive of Waterford Today, Katherine Cahill of Prima Modelling Agency and Pamela Flood, former Miss Ireland and presenter of "Off the Rails" fashion programme.

     

    The judges were very impressed by the girls as individuals. They thought the finalists had great personalities and all looked stunning. From all accounts it was a great night of entertainment, a "snake lady" intrigued the crowd with a 9ft snake, while hostesses dressed in carnival outfits gave the night a distinctively festive feel.   • 150 students participate in Challenge Science

    150 students from five secondary schools in Waterford city, Co Waterford and Co Tipperary have participated in Challenge Science 2007, a programme of activities supported by Genzyme Ireland at Waterford Institute of Technology.

    Designed to develop students’ interest in science, engineering and technology, the event held over two days saw the young people attend interactive workshops entitled ‘The case of the poisoned Professor’ which saw them use forensic science to solve a crime; ‘Food for thought!’, a quiz on the importance of diet to health; ‘Defence against disease’ which focused on biotechnology and ‘Your future in science’ which centred on career opportunities.

    Students from the Presentation Secondary School; Mercy Convent Secondary School and St Paul’s Community College in Waterford attended the workshops on May 8 while groups from St Declan’s, Kilmacthomas and Scoil Mhuire, Carrick-on-Suir participated on May 9.

    CHEWING GUM LITTER

    Waterford City Council will run an awareness campaign on chewing gum litter this summer in an effort to reduce the amount of chewing gum litter on the streets of Waterford City. Chewing Gum accounts for some 31.6% of all litter countrywide and is the second largest component element of litter after cigarette related litter. Gum on our streets is a major problem and is extremely costly and difficult to remove.

    A Gum Litter Taskforce was established in March 2006 based on an agreement between the Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government and the Chewing Gum Industry on a programme to tackle the problem of chewing gum litter on our streets.   • I.N.T.O. Mini sevens competition County Finals

    The county finals of the I.N.T.O. Mini sevens competitions were held in Bushy Park on Wednesday afternoon last.

    The first game was the Peil na gCailini final between the girls of St Saviours N.S. Ballybeg and the girls of Ballymacarbry N.S. This was a very exciting encounter throughout between two very evenly matched skilful teams. The wet conditions of the afternoon resulted in the scoring of many goals in this short game. The finals score read St Saviours 6-4 Ballymacarbry 4-2

    The second game was the Hurling final between the boys of Bunscoil Bhothar na Naomh Lismore and Clonea Power N.S. This game contained many passages of skilful play but Lismore proved to be a much stronger side and emerged easy victors at the final whistle.

  • The Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford

    Waterford County Council, in association with Waterford Sports Partnership, Fáilte Ireland and Cycling Ireland and with a number of cycling clubs in the Waterford region, has launched the Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford. This will be a major one-day cycling event on Sunday, August 19th and will involve anything up to 800 cyclists. Even in its initial year, it will have a significant tourism impact. It will also be a fantastic opportunity for local people who are interested in leisure cycling.

    The Tour will be a non-competitive touring event consisting of three different routes of three differing degrees of difficulty so as to accommodate all levels and abilities.     County Championships conclude

    ON SUNDAY LAST IN DESPERATE WEATHER CONDITIONS the final stage of the County Championships saw athletes from all the clubs in the county collect medals. These were Tramore AC, Waterford AC, KCK, Ferrybank, West Waterford and An Gaeltacht. One of the best races of the day was the girls U13 600 Metres with twins Aoife and Muiriosa O’Sullivan, Tramore, finishing first and second in a thriller. Autumn Coady, Ferrybank was third. Trebles were recorded by the following: April Flynn, U14; Niall Kelleher, U15; Stephen Murphy, U16; all from Ferrybank AC; Lisa Houlihan U15; Patrick Palmer U17; David Earley U14, all from West Waterford and Sinead Hearne KCK, U18. Several athletes had doubles. The Donal O’Keeffe Memorial Perpetual Cup went to Stephen Murphy, De La Salle, for the best Long Jump performance of the championship.

  • Waterford to host Volvic Tag Rugby Open Day

    Waterford RFC will host a Volvic Tag Rugby Open Evening this Wednesday night the 16th of May at Kilbarry Park in Waterford.

    The aim of the open evening, which takes place from 7:30 to 9:30pm, is to give everyone in the area a chance to come along and learn about Tag Rugby, how it is played and how much fun it can be.

    The open evening will be very informal and all people have to bring is a pair of runners if they are interested in getting involved and participating in a few practice rounds.

    Waterford RFC will again be hosting the Volvic Tag Summer League this year and it will run for nine weeks starting on the 21st of May, with the National Finals taking place on the 28th of July in Dublin.

  • Clonea Strand Hotel Swim Club Annual sponsored Swim

    Young members of Clonea Strand Hotel Swim Club presenting the proceeds of its annual sponsored swim to John Connolly, Hon. CEO of the Waterford charity The Irish Lifesaving Foundation. Included is Martin Lacey, Manager Clonea Strand Hotel Leisure Centre. The Foundation supports schools based water safety education in the developing world and funds the training of unemployed youths as lifeguards in Africa and India.   • Sullivan’s strike lifts Blues off the bottom

    WATERFORD UNITED 1 - 0 DROGHEDA UNITED

    A FANTASTIC SECOND HALF PERFORMANCE, aided by a stunning volley from Vinny Sullivan, helped Waterford United to a much needed three points that gave them victory against Galway United at the RSC last night.

    Sullivan scored a priceless goal that ensured that the home side moved off the foot of the Eircom FAI League of Ireland Premier division table and in truth, it was a deserved victory as the Blues made it three games unbeaten after drawing with both Sligo Rovers and Drogheda United.

    Despite defeat against Cobh Ramblers in the league cup, Waterford responded in style with one of their performances of the season and as a result moved third from bottom, clearly showing the importance of the victory.

  • €40,000 raised by 55 mile cycle for Ronald McDonald House

    The charity cycle took place on Sunday April 29th 2007 in aid of the Ronald McDonald House at Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Eoin and Molly are both former long term ICU patients in Crumlin.

    Situated on the grounds of Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, the Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for parents and families of very sick children. RMCC gratefully accepts donations. Since families who stay at the House pay only a small percentage of the actual cost of operation, the House must depend on generous help from individuals and corporations.

  • CEO of Chernobyl Aid Ireland receives humanitarian award

    Mr Liam Grant, CEO of Chernobyl Aid Ireland has received an award for his involvement and commitment to humanitarian aid from the Belarussian Government, in Minsk on Tuesday, the 15th of May. Mr Grant was responsible for founding the charity organisation, Chernobyl Aid Ireland Ltd. in 1997. Prior to that he had been involved with the Chernobyl Children’s Project, as both a director and a manager of transport. Liam, who hails from Tipperary is a long term resident of the Waterford area. He is well known to many from his occupation as an ambulance driver with HSE South serving the Waterford area. Mr. Grant asserts that Chernobyl Aid Ireland welcomes volunteers from all walks of life, not just tradespeople. For example, this year two chefs sanded floors in the accommodation wing.   • Irish Sports Council engages WIT to conduct important research

    THE Irish Sports Council has engaged academics in the Department of Health, Sport & Exercise Science at Waterford Institute of Technology to conduct two important pieces of research on physical activity.

    A member of the Institute’s Centre for Health Behaviour Research, Dr Sean Connor is to lead a two-year research project on sports and leisure patterns among Irish adolescents. The project is seen as especially timely in the context of growing concerns about links between sedentary lifestyles and increased instances of obesity.

    The research commission is building on an established Institute competency in the area with Dr Connor responsible for a previous publication on youth sport in Ireland. He also co-authored a Royal Irish Academy-funded report on ‘The Functional Implementation of Volunteerism in a Civil Society’.   • Garda enquiry into Brooks’ Fire

    WATERFORD GARDAÍ are investigating a fire that broke out and utterly destroyed Brooks Builder Providers at Park Road. It is believed that the devastating blaze occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on the morning of Saturday last.

    Speaking to Waterford Today, Sgt. John McDonald said that the scene has been forensically examined and they are awaiting the results of the examination. He is appealing to anybody who might be in a position to assist the Gardaí with their inquiries. Sgt. McDonald described the bank holiday weekend as “busy”. There were 5 drink driving arrests made in comparison to the same period last year when only 2 were made. There were 33 incidents of public order offences, compared to 30 last year.   • Aer Arann Waterford to Birmingham flights take off next week

    THE Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, is to launch Aer Arann’s latest service from Waterford Airport, when the first scheduled flight to Birmingham takes off from Killowen on Monday. 

    In addition to the new route, the range of other services from Waterford Airport is set to significantly expand, with much improved flight times from business travellers.

    Flights to London Luton continue to operate twice daily with additional frequency planned on selected days during the peak months of July and August. The first morning flight to London Luton on weekdays will be at 7.30 am, allowing business travellers to complete a day’s work in London and return to Waterford on the same day.

  • Armed Robbery at Stradbally Post Office

    GARDAÍ at Tramore are currently investigating an armed robbery of the Post Office in Stradbally, Co. Waterford, which occurred at 9 am last Friday morning, the 4th of May.

    It is understood that the robbery was carried out by two males who were accompanied by a third male who did not enter the post office. Of the two who did enter, one was armed with what appeared to be a handgun and the other with what appeared to be a wrench. At the time of the robbery there were only staff members present in the post office and the culprits got away with an undisclosed amount of money in a silver coloured car.
