  • Waterford take on The Kingdom

    Wednesday, 30th May 2007

    GAA notes by The villager

I guess there are not too many times in Waterford that a

Munster Senior football encounter is as eagerly awaited as the semi-final in Fraher Field, Dungarvan on Sunday next. The reason for all this excitement is the visit of All-Ireland

    champions Kerry.

Waterford, having already put up a very determined display in their opening round when they disposed of a much more fancied Clare side, should have absolutely no fears or hang-ups going in to face the pre-

championship favourites. They are the underdog.

They are been given a slim, if in some quarters, no chance. The same scenario that applied in 2006 when the Deise travelled to the powerhouse of the Kingdom and put up one hell of a display. OK! defeat was their lot on that occasion but, you know Cork turned over Kerry

Usually games between Waterford and Longford are dire affairs but this contest started off at a lightning pace as both sides had chances during the opening fifteen minutes. SHAMROCK ROVERS 1 - 1 WATERFORD UNITED (Match abandoned after 52 mins)

Stop the Lights! In an age when we are led to believe that everything is coming up roses in League of Ireland football a dodgy floodlight pylon which came loose at the foundations due to the strong breeze brought a halt to proceedings in Tolka Park on Friday night last. Last month a game between Shelbourne and Limerick had to be switched to Whitehall because the playing surface was deemed unplayable. Because of last Friday’s fiasco, Saturday’s match between Shelbourne and Finn Harps had to be postponed.

Many pundits and indeed clubs have been critical of Tolka Park this season and there is no doubt that the trouble Shelbourne have got themselves into is the reason why the old stadium has begun to fall apart. An engineer who supports Shamrock

  • Women are victims of social inequality

    Wednesday, 23rd May 2007

According to Sinn Féin election candidate Cllr. David Cullinane women are bearing a disproportionate burden of the social inequalities in modern Ireland. Cllr. Cullinane believes that women are subjected to unequal treatment across a range of issues, such as unequal pay, the unfair financial treatment of carers and single parents, the inadequate funding made available for support centres such as the Rape Crisis Centre and Womens Refuges. He also states that "Sinn Féin has pledged to increase Maternity Leave to 52 weeks, and also to introduce Paternity Leave of 4 weeks to enable men to support their partners in the first few crucial weeks of a child’s life". Cllr. Cullinane is adamant that these inequalities must be addressed. He claims that what has been set down in legislation does not translate into reality, "Despite equal pay legislation, women’s wages as

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
