    Wednesday, 17th August 2011

Irish Water, the agency which will manage the state's water network, must spearhead a national water efficiency programme according to Kingspan Water – Ireland's water technology company.

"Too much of the debate in recent months has been about charging hard pressed consumers for water and installing water meters, and there hasn't been enough discussion about how householders can conserve water and harvest some of the millions of litres of rain water that fall in Ireland each year," said Alan Wright, Director of Kingspan Water.

  • Back to School Allowance – D'Arcy

    Wednesday, 17th August 2011

Cllr. Jim D'Arcy has advised parents to be aware of administrative changes in the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance this year. He says that the process will be automated for the most part and that many people who automatically qualify will already have received a letter from the Department of Social Protection in June, telling them how and when the payment will be made. However, he points out that people who don't automatically qualify (such as those in receipt of Disability Allowance or Carer's Allowance) will need to complete an application form. "For parents who have not yet been notified, but who are entitled to payment, they should apply as soon as possible. The forms can be obtained online at welfare.ie or they can be got from local Social Welfare offices or by simply texting ‘form BTSCFA', followed

  • Waterford childhoods revisited with a taste of nostalgia

    Wednesday, 17th August 2011

Those long hot summer days of our childhood may be gone but some of the tastes of our youth are back thanks to Waterford woman, Fiona O'Farrell. Following in her parents footsteps, Fiona set up her own online sweet shop, PennyJellies.com in January of this year.

A former banker and textile designer, Fiona saw a gap in the market for the nostalgic confectionery of our childhood, such as Big Time Bars, Macaroon Bars and the very difficult to source, Fizzle Sticks.

The online shop, http://www.pennyjellies.com, was launched in January and is unique as it is the only Irish "corner shop" with such a large range of "Retro" confectionery online. With an definite touch of nostalgia PennyJellies.com stocks sentimental favourites such as Flogs, Wham Bars, chocolate mice, gobstoppers and flying sauces.

Fiona came up with the idea to supply the retro delights

  • FROM DUNGARVAN TO SOUTH KOREA AN ADVENTURE TEACHING ENGLISH

    Wednesday, 17th August 2011

Five months down and the adventure continues for Fiona McCullagh from Abbeyside, Dungarvan. The DCU graduate packed her bag and headed to South Korea earlier this year to teach English as a foreign language. Accompanied by two friends, each month abroad offers new and unique experiences.

Fiona's 12 month contract is based in a school in Uiwang, south of the Korean capital, Seoul. She teaches young students English and in return the school provides her with a competitive monthly salary and free accommodation.

While news reports have described a harsh monsoon season for Korea, the area where Fiona is placed has escaped the most severe affects. She did however willingly take part in the Boryeong Mud Festival where she came across many nationalities enjoying this unique cultural event.

Fiona explains ‘In the mud area, there were bouncy slides, a pool and obstacle courses

    The Temperance Hall

I notice that one of Waterford's best known clubs, the Temperance Hall, has acquired the services of a new caretaker, who replaced Mr. Jimmy Coughlan (gone to join the great army of exiles in England), who had been for over 20 years in that onerous position. Jimmy was an expert on the care and maintenance of billiard tables, and his services were in keen demand in that capacity. There are many who miss his burly form from the precincts of the old club, some even say that the place is not the same without him. Although he was what one would call an easy going man, and was fond of fireside gossip, he kept the hall in excellent trim, and presided over the billiard tables and card games with an expert eye and unhurried capability. His

    Wednesday, 17th August 2011

The Irish Dental Association has warned patients of the danger of many tooth whitening products saying many of them range from ‘useless to dangerous'. The Association has also expressed its concern about unsupervised tooth whitening.

The warning coincides with new plans from the European Commission to regulate the use of hydrogen peroxide, the chemical used in tooth whitening.

Under the new regulations, which should come into force next month, only fully qualified dentists will be permitted to provide this service.

Tom Feeney, IDA representative on the Council of European Dentists, and a Dublin based dentist believes regulation of the sector is long overdue and said the new measures would safeguard patient safety which is the number one priority.

‘Dentists are fully qualified to carry out a full oral examination, make a diagnosis on the basis of that examination and the patient's full dental history

  • "There is life after the State exams" - Heads Up

    Wednesday, 17th August 2011

HeadsUp, Rehab's mental health promotion project, is advising young people that there is life after the State exams and to realise that the exams represent just one avenue to reaching a career. HeadsUp recognises that some young people may be anxious at the moment as they await their Leaving Certificate results on Wednesday (17 August), however, it is important to remember that there is a range of options available to everyone after they receive their results.

Collette Ryan, Rehab Project Manager for HeadsUp, acknowledges that this can be a very difficult time for exam students. "Results time can be very stressful for young people as it is a day of mixed emotions. Many feel powerless as there is nothing that they can do now to change their results. We want students to know that help is out there if things are

  • Calor launch Home Energy Grant for Waterford Homeowners

    Wednesday, 17th August 2011

Calor have launched a Home Energy Grant for Waterford homeowners, which is designed to run in parallel with the Government's Better Energy retrofitting programme launched in April of this year.

There are over 600,000 homes in rural Ireland that cannot access the natural gas network. By choosing Calor, rural dwellers can have gas delivered to a bulk storage tank at their home. The tank can now even be placed underground as required. This means that rural homeowners can have gas regardless of where they live.

To coincide with the Home Energy Grant launch, Calor are also introducing a new One-Stop-Shop service. A first of its kind in the Irish market, this service is designed to make it easier for homeowners to make the switch from oil to cleaner, more energy efficient, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).1

In the past, switching heating system was a

  • 60% of Motorists would change their route to avoid new tolls

    Wednesday, 17th August 2011

    – AA poll results Additional tolls on Dublin's M50 and on other routes around the country would cause extensive traffic congestion on alternative routes, according to the AA.

An AA survey of over 13,000 Irish motorists shows that 60.9% of drivers would change their route to avoid a new toll if one were applied. The results show that proposals for new tolls on the M50 would do much more harm than good because they would cause additional traffic to avoid the motorway and re-congest suburbs like Sandyford, Dundrum and Blanchardstown instead.

"To apply a toll on the entire length of the M50 would be an act of traffic planning madness." Says Director of Policy Conor Faughnan. "Tolls cause traffic to divert. This is a simple fact of life that neither the government nor the NRA can ignore. To apply a toll to

We know about the exclusiveness of the hotels that the various leaders are going to be staying as well as some of their security detail. We know about the menus from which they will be choosing from. There is little about summit meeting that the …
