  • Salty Dog @ Electric Picnic 2011

    Wednesday, 31st August 2011

That flea-ridden pub-tanned charmer of the Electric Picnic, the Salty Dog, heaves itself up and smiles as another day dawns.

The faded red shipwreck, once a proud vessel of the seas, now lies in the woods at Stradbally in decadent retirement, lowering the tone and living the life of a strawberry-nosed ex-pat with a few bob, but not quite enough.

Round the beginning of September each year, a large, raised stage—cut from the mid-section of the wreck—comes alive. Rum-fuelled sea shanties, rasping washed-up folksters, desert island sounds, and gravelly maritime yarns find their home here… the infamous Salty Dog Saloon emerges out of the fallen masts and rigging when the sun dips below the yard arm.

The Rubberbandits will tie their horse up to the bows, with a 'Dirt Rave' featuring MC Daddy Earl; Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros bring their 13-strong

  • How do I invest in precious metals?

    Wednesday, 31st August 2011

Apart from silver and gold, platinum is another precious metal to invest in. Like gold and silver, it trades around the clock on the commodity markets. It tends to fetch a higher price than gold during routine periods of market and political stability, simply because it is much rarer. Far less platinum is mined annually than gold.

A number of factors determine the price of platinum. Like silver, it is considered an industrial metal and the greatest demand for platinum comes from automotive catalysts which are used to reduce harmful emissions. Jewellery constitutes the next biggest demand, followed by petroleum and chemical refining catalysts and the computer industry. Because of the auto industry's heavy reliance on the metal, platinum prices are largely determined by car sales and production numbers. Another issue is that platinum mines are heavily concentrated in just two

  • Increased Fines Not Solution to Rogue Landlords – USI

    Wednesday, 31st August 2011

No less than 30 tents were pitched on lawn at the Department of the Environment recently as part of the Union of Students in Ireland's (USI) campaign to secure a Deposit Protection Scheme for tenants.

Students braved the cold overnight outside the Custom House in protest against rogue landlords, who are targeting students' deposits as income rather than as insurance that the terms of the lease will be complied with.

A spokesman for the Department of the Environment said that it was looking at introducing higher fines for landlords, who break the law by withholding deposits unfairly. However, stronger fines for landlords are not an effective solution for students, who will still be out of pocket, if their deposits are not returned. There is a 12-month waiting list to have a case such as this dealt with by the PRTB and a

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
