  • Quarter-final places still up for grabs - GAA notes by The Villager

    Wednesday, 31st August 2011

Although five teams have already qualified for the Waterford Senior Hurling quarter finals following last weekend's full complement of games, there are still a number of spots to be decided over the coming weeks. Reigning champions De La Salle and beaten finalists Ballygunner confirmed their places along with Mount Sion, Lismore and Fourmilewater although in some cases it was just by "the skin of their teeth". However it really all about avoiding the banana skins and reaching qualification.

County kingpins of 2010 De La Salle were mightily relieved at Fraher Field on Sunday as they came from behind to eke out a 1-13 apiece draw against Fourmilewater. The challengers got off to the best possible start as Jamie Barron goaled early on and this along with some fine point taking gave the Ballymac outfit a comfortable three point lead at the

    Young Blues travel to Wexford

    Wexford Youths U19s 1 - 1 Waterford U-19s

The young Blues travelled to Wexford to play their first game of the new National U-19 League and, having lead since the 30th minute, were within moments of gaining all three points, as their hosts scored in the 90th minute to equalize.

Blues manager Tommy Griffin set-out a 4-4-2 attacking formation with Sean Maguire and Russell Quirke up front, and a midfeld four of Alan Rhodes, Jason Keane, Conor Coad and Jack Doherty. Captain Adam Potter, Thomas Whitty, Conor Acheson and Ethan Butler made up the back line. Disappointingly there was no place in the starting eleven for Craig Keane as many supporters were looking forward to seeing him in action at this level.

Both teams started nervously and the defences quickly gained control of the game, with Whitty and Acheson

  • Waterford United crash out of FAI Cup

    Wednesday, 31st August 2011

A Waterford United team that appeared to lack spirit and effort made a timid exit from the FAI Cup on Friday night at the RSC. Former Blues player Daryl Kavanagh was the man who came back to haunt his old club by scoring two goals within the opening 20 minutes. He opened the scoring on 17 minutes, heading to the back of the net from 3 yards after the home goalkeeper Kevin Burns had parried a header from Shane McFaul following a corner kick. He was on the mark once again in the 20th minute, this time finding the net from inside the left side of the penalty area after good work on the right by Anto Murphy.

Dwayne Wilson had two chances for Waterford shortly afterwards. He headed wide at the back post following a right wing cross from Paul

Jim Power lives at Ard na Greine in Waterford City and is an ardent supporter of the Solas Centre. This is following the “enormous” help the Solas Centre gave him when he was diagnosed with cancer. At first Jim coped by himself and kept up a front but soon found that this was not working and contacted the Solas Centre.

There he could let down his guard and open up to people. As he entered the Centre and was greeted at reception, he says he broke down. “The lady sat me down and got me a cup of tea and put her arms around me like a mother.” Jim availed of counselling and reflexology at the Solas Centre and believes that this service was invaluable in

  • Giant whale beaches itself in County Waterford

    Wednesday, 24th August 2011

A 12 metre male Sperm Whale stranded itself on Cunnigar Spit, near Dungarvan, last Friday. The animal was first spotted in difficulty off the Hook peninsula on Thursday night.. When news of the stranding was first known, the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and the National Parks and Wildlife Service co-ordinated efforts to relieve the mammal's condition by keeping it damp with seawater as it lay on its side. The last live Sperm Whale that beached on the Irish coast was four years ago in County Donegal. The sperm whale is the world's largest predator and while over 67 have been washed up on the Irish coastline, most have them have died at sea. The last authenticated stranding in the Southeast was in County Wexford 18 years ago. The whale was almost completely submerged by the high tide on Friday

  • Back-to-School allowance

    Wednesday, 24th August 2011

    backlog concern

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVP) is concerned that thousands of families may not receive their Back to School Clothing & Footwear Allowance before the new school term begins at the end of the month.

Schools are asked by the SVP to make allowances for pupils who might have to return to school without their school uniforms.

According to the SVP there is a risk that many eligible families, who do not receive payment in time, will fall into arrears with other bills or use moneylenders in order to pay for clothing and footwear for school.

The SVP says that it welcomes the automation of existing payment claims.

Despite 127,000 automated payments made since July for existing applicants, a further 66,000 applications were made to the Department of Social Protection from the 1st July to 17th August.  According to the Department over

NAMA and its impact on Family Law

Most would agree that how NAMA deals with most of its client's, being property developers in over their heads in debt, is largely secret and open to speculation. A recent judgement of the High Court in a family law case referring to the couple known as Mr XY and Mrs XY, sheds some light on the interaction of the Agency and will raise questions as to how future family law cases will be dealt with.

The case, an applicatiopn for Judicial Separation commenced in 2007 when the assets of Mr XY were valued in some hunderds of millions. At the delivery of the Judgement in July 2010 Mr XY's assets were now valued at €1.4 billion should there be a forced sale by the banks whilst his present borrowings stood at some €2.3 billion. • Real reform needed not the rearranging of deck chairs - Cullinane

    Wednesday, 24th August 2011

    Senator David Cullinane

Waterford Sinn Féin Senator and Party Spokesperson on political reform Senator David Cullinane has described proposals by Government to merge local VEC’s, amalgamate local councils, reduce the number of TD’s and abolish the Seanad as rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic.

He said the Government proposals are a mish mash of flawed and ill thought out Fine Gael and Labour election gimmicks. Describing the proposals as ‘cosmetic’ Senator Cullinane said they fall a long way short of the radical political and institutional reforms necessary.

    Speaking today Senator Cullinane said:

"I am absolutely convinced that we need greater transparency and accountability in Government and in public services. The latest economic crisis was caused by a corrupt and incompetent Government, a weak system of governance and the lack of robust and effective regulation. Too much power lies in the hands of the

Google AlertWhen a company which has it's European Headquarters here in Ireland is called 'evil' and 'immoral' by M.P.s in The House of Commons you tend to sit up and take notice. The particular company that was being referred to was Google and the reason it had enraged M.P.s in London was because even though it has a big operation there and conducts a lot of business there it pays no corporate tax. It does this by having all of its financial transactions finished here in Ireland. And the company here is …
