Co Waterford Community Forum, Waterford County Council, Tipperary Institute of Technology and University of Wales Trinity St David, all form part of the steering committee, and are working hard to raise the awareness within local communities as to potential social enterprise development in their areas.

  • Letter handed into Minister for Health at Dail Eireann

    Wednesday, 13th July 2011

    Dear Minister,

I wish to appraise you of the current situation regarding the loss of the 26 bed St. Bridgids unit in St. Patrick's Hospital, Waterford.

St. Bridgids ward was closed in 2009 and the HSE gave a firm commitment that they would replace the ward with a new 50 bed nursing facility. Thirty months later we are still awaiting the start of this project.

Waterford City council has lifted the preservation order from former chapel in order to remove any impediment that may obstruct the construction of this new unit.

We have been assured by HSE South that the building of this unit is a priority objective. Waterford City has lost 26 bed units in their geriatric hospital in St. Patrick's whilst every other geriatric hospital has increased their bed capacity in Munster.

This is an intolerable situation and we appeal to you Minister

  • Medical injury cases are perhaps the most complex genre of personal injury law.

    Wednesday, 13th July 2011

At present the Injuries Board which was established to assess personal injury claims will refuse jurisdiction in respect of medical malpractice.

To make a claim under medical malpractice/negligence the plaintiff must have suffered an injury as a result of such negligence caused by the person or body who owed a duty of care to the plaintiff. A mistake does not in itself amount to medical negligence and the procedure for proving medical negligence is extremely onerous. Solicitors will only proceed with such a case when they strongly believe that they will win the case. This is due to the protracted nature of the proceedings and the high cost in getting a case to court. Indeed legal proceedings will only be commenced following receipt of an expert medical report supporting the allegations and indeed the court will consider not only did the

  • Waterford Wildlife Bugs

    Wednesday, 13th July 2011

Creepy Crawlies of any kind here are often referred to as ‘Insects' though in many cases most are not insects at all. In America, they are usually collectively known as ‘Bugs' even though many are not bugs at all. So, you might well ask "what's the difference between an Insect and a Bug"? In the formal world of entomology both are very specific. All insects have bodies that are in three parts - the head that contains the mouth and eyes; the thorax that contains the heart and other essential organs to which three pairs of legs and two visible pairs of wings are attached and the abdomen that contains the digestive system and reproductive organs. Therefore, flies, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, bees, wasps etc. are true Insects. Spiders, woodlice or aphids are not. The characteristics of true Bugs are equally

  • Reasons for Hope - Biblical perspectives for living

    Wednesday, 13th July 2011

Whatever else you might say about Peter, you have to admit he was courageous. Think about the time he walked on water (Matthew 14:22-33). Jesus had sent these seasoned fishermen off across the Sea of Galilee and while a storm raged they saw a man walking on the sea. This terrified them far more than the wind and the waves, as they had assumed it must have been a ghost.

But Jesus comforted them by identifying Himself. Peter, looking for further assurance said, "Lord, if it's you, tell me to come to you on the water," (v. 28). When Jesus invited him to come, Peter stepped out of the boat. That took courage. But with the Lord's presence and His invitation, he had the courage to step out in faith and do the impossible.

Later, we hear Peter confidently asserting his willingness

    The european health insurance card

Question: My daughter and I are planning a holiday in France and Switzerland this summer and I'm wondering what happens if one of us becomes ill. Am I liable to pay for any medical costs incurred if I don't take out insurance?

Answer: You and your daughter each need an individual European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This card allows you to access public healthcare services if you become ill or get injured when visiting certain European countries. It doesn't cover private treatment or the cost of repatriation to Ireland, if one of you becomes very ill.

The countries covered by the card are the 27 member states of the EU, the three other members of the EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and Switzerland. The card is not required for a visit to the UK if you can show that

  • Strange but - True!

    Wednesday, 13th July 2011

By Bill Sones and Rich Sones, PhD

    Q. For you Einsteins of the circus, what makes an aerialist's quadruple somersault so difficult and a "quad and a half" virtually impossible?

    A. It was July 10, 1982, at the Ringling Brothers Circus when aerial acrobat Miguel Vazquez let go his grip on the bar of his swing, tucked, rotated a full four times, then stretched out his arms to be caught by his brother Juan on another swing, says Jearl Walker in "The Flying Circus of Physics." It was the first time a "quad" had been achieved before a circus audience, despite attempts at it since 1897.

The two requirements for a successful quad are rapid enough rotation and exact timing to pull out or risk rotating too quickly to be caught. The tuck position pulls in the body's center of mass, just as

Does my cat need veterinary treatment?

    Reader's query:

"My two year old male cat called Pixie has a solid lump on the side of his face, with a small blister over it. He reacted quite aggressively when I touched it, which is strange for him as he is normally very affectionate. I am not sure how long this lump is there, as I only noticed it today. Should I bring him to have it checked or is there a good chance it will go away by itself in a few days?"

There are a large number of possible causes for an abnormal lump such as the one you are describing on your cat's face, some of which can be quite serious and even life-threatening. It would definitely be best if you did have Pixie examined by a vet to establish the cause of
