    The first new state of the art office of the new union was officially opened in 39 O'Connell Street, Dungarvan on Friday 15th June 2007 by Mick O'Reilly "Unite" ATGWU Regional Secretary, Jimmy Kelly President "T & G" & ATGWU Regional Secretary Designate & Jerry Shanahan Amicus National Official in the presence of a wide circle of officials, current and past members from both the ATGWU & Amicus" across the region in what was described as an historic occasion.

  • Presentation of payments under Waterford County Council’s 2006 Capital Grants Scheme

    On the 21st of June 2007 in the Civic Offices in Dungarvan, the then Mayor of County Waterford, Councillor Mary Greene presented cheques totalling €112,000 to nine groups Countywide under Waterford County Council's 2006 Capital Grants Scheme.

    Councillor Greene said that she was delighted that planning levies paid by developers were at last being forwarded to community groups for worthwhile projects in the County.

    This scheme is devised to assist in the provision of recreational and community facilities and amenities and improve the quality of life for the people of County Waterford and their visitors.

    The groups funded under the 2006 Scheme received funding ranging from €5,000 to €20,000.

    The groups are:

    Abbeyside Scout Group, which received €5,000,

    Dunhill Community Childcare Group, which received € 20,000, Modeligo Community Centre, which received €10,000,

    Ballymacarbry Community Centre, which received €10,000, Killrossanty GAA received €10,000, Tallow Enterprise

  • Waterford Wedgwood’s programme for financial recovery proves a success

    Waterford Wedgwood issued the "Final Results" of their financial growth last Wednesday, the 27th of June. The report indicates that "demand for the Group’s products is strong". The "total orders on the 1st of June stood at f66 million or f15 million more than the same date last year".

    The CEO of Waterford Wedgwood, Mr Peter Cameron stated: "2007 has been a year of solid development for Waterford Wedgwood. While the Board recognises that addional progress in profitability is required, we are nonetheless satisfied and encouraged by the improvements made in the last twelve months".

    Mr Cameron added that he is particularly satisfied with the growth in demand for Waterford Wedgwood’s products "with orders at the start of June up 30% on last year".

    He remarked that "the new additions to our product portfolio are clearly gaining traction in the market

    A new Ipsos MORI survey of 100 people with type 2 diabetes has revealed that one in four (24%) of those surveyed feel their disease is not controlled

    properly, one in five (22%) that it is taking over their life and one in six (16%) that the treatment side effects are difficult to live with.

  • Volunteer Information Fayre at City Hall

    The Volunteer Information Fayre held in City Hall on Wednesday, the 20th of June, was a tremendous success. A number of Waterford city based voluntary organisations were in attendance to showcase the voluntary work being carried out in our communities.

    A large number of volunteers were present at the Fayre to encourage the involvement of new volunteers to their organisations. The voluntary groups ranged from Bilberry Goat Heritage Trust, Ballybeg Community Education Project, along with St. Vincent de Paul, Samaritans, Waterford Befriending, and Waterford Voluntary Youth Council with many others, too numerous to mention here. Tom O’Neill, Waterford county Commissioner, Waterford Scouts said, "the only restriction to activities is a lack of volunteer adults". "We need you" was the message that Tom and the Waterford Scouts were hoping to convey at the event.

  • RSA announce details of new package to reduce driving test waiting times

    The RSA has announced details of a package they plan to implement which will see the average waiting time for driving tests reduced to ten weeks by next Spring. This is particularly good news for Waterford, as figures released on the 18th of June revealed that Waterford has the longest waiting time in the country. The average waiting time for a driving test in Waterford is 38 weeks, whereas waiting times in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and Co. Cavan are as low as 12 weeks.

    The RSA has launched a massive recruiting drive, which is to result in the employment of an additional 126 "directly employed driver testers" and 11 driver testing supervisors.They also intend to employ 6 retired driver testers by contact.   • Housing association "Respond!" celebrates 25 years through youth involvement

    RESPOND!, Ireland’s largest housing association with more than 500 homes in Waterford city and county, this week launched their National Art Competition with Don Conroy, well-known children’s photographer and regular contributor to Den TV. The competition, which is being held nationally, commemorates 25 years of Respond! and will take place throughout the summer. Respond!’s head office is located at Airmount in Waterford.

    With a win for Limerick in the Munster Senior Hurling final second replay over Tipperary, it created an unusual pairing for what looks a mouthwatering finale to the competition.

    Waterford have been there or thereabouts for the past four years and now a new name has come into the hat. Mind you, Limerick have always threatened more than they have achieved but their phenomenal success at under 21 level has maybe finally begun to pay dividends.   • WIT’s cricket underdogs achieve new heights

    Waterford Institute of Technology’s newly founded cricket team propelled itself to the last four of the Irish inter-varsity tournament in Belfast recently – beating UCC, DCU and DIT en route to the semi-final.

    As a result of their semi-final match against Trinity College, Dublin, Hari Krishna Ramasetty and Prateek Thakar of the WIT cricket team were selected to play on the Irish National Universities Team for a game played in Sheffield, UK. The team, captained by Ali Naseer, has been playing for less than twelve months, and their success is made even more remarkable considering their lack of a permanent practice pitch.

    Big run by McCarthy ON SATURDAY LAST David McCarthy of West WATERFORD AC had a fine run in a 1,500 metre race in Watford in England. In anything but ideal conditions he set a personal best time of 3 minutes 47-27 seconds, just one hundredth of a second behind the winner from England.

    KALYN GETS QUALIFIER

    On Sunday the Cork IT track Kalyn Sheehan of Ferrybank AC achieved the qualifying time for the European Junior Championships when she finished second in the Munster under-18 400 metre hurdles race in 61.00 seconds. But Niall Tuohy, despite a personal best of one minute 52-35 seconds in winning the 800 metres was just outside the qualifying time.

    An Taoiseach Launches New Ladies Football Championship Structure Ladies Football Mirror Champions League Format

    An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern TD, launched the 2007 TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Football Championships at an evening ceremony in Croke Park recently.

    The top 16 teams in the country will enter the TG4 Senior All Ireland Ladies Football Championship and are drawn into four "Champions League" style pools with four teams in each pool. The winners of the four provincial championships – Cork, Laois, Mayo and Armagh - enter the draw ranked as the top seeds and will all be drawn into separate pools.

    The provincial runners-up enter the draw as second seeds and cannot be drawn in the same pool as their respective provincial winner or cannot face another provincial runner-up in the pool stages.

  • Waterford set for Spar Mile Challenge

    The Waterford leg of the Spar Mile Challenge will take place this Saturday, the 7th of July, at the Waterford RSC starting at 11am.

    People can still register to take part in the Challenge online until Wednesday 4th July at www.sparmilechallenge.com and after this they can register on the day at their local venue.

    The SPAR Mile Challenge, which will be one of the biggest participation events in the country during 2007, will take place in 28 venues across Ireland on the 7th of July.

    The event has been created to encourage people of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels to run a mile on that day, whether it is for charity, for a challenge or just for fun with friends and family.

    All those who compete will be accurately timed and graded to show what category of runner they fall into

    WATERFORD UNITED suffered another defeat in the Eircom FAI League of Ireland Premier division after going down disappointingly against fellow strugglers,

    Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds on Sunday afternoon last.

    It was a very poor performance from the Blues and they will now have to regroup for the clash against St. Patrick’s Athletic at the RSC on this Friday night.

    Bray went in front inside the opening six minutes and it came after former Waterford United player, Alan Cawley whipped in a corner kick from the left and Stephen Fox couldn't believe his luck as he powered a free header past the helpless Dean Delaney.
