  • Garter Lane is pleased to present ‘Kings River to Guillamene'…

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

‘Kings River to Guillamene,' is an exhibition by artist Vanessa Daws.

This exciting exhibition is part of Garter Lanes annual children's festival ‘Sprog' which encourages children to engage with their creative side.

Vanessa Daws work refers to her ongoing fascination with water as an inspiration and source of energy. For Vanessa's recent exhibitions and residencies she initially connects with the location by swimming in the nearest body of water to form a sense of belonging. Vanessa has swam throughout the year in The King's River, "The Three Sisters" and in Waterford's own Guillamene; meeting an array of swimmers en route. These swims, encounters and images taken, form the basis of her work. Energy and our own individual ‘drive' has been a theme throughout Vanessa's art practice.

The exhibition will open to the public at Garter Lane Theatre Gallery, 22A O'Connell Street, Waterford on

  • Compulsion - The Minutes Hands up who likes rock and roll?

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

And by rock and roll we mean proper rock and roll, born in the 50's, dragged kicking and screaming through the late 20th century under the stewardship of true believers – Chuck Berry, John Lennon, Phil Lynott, Keith Richards. This is not rock and roll as a device to sell Rimmel lipstick. This is visceral, bloody and urgent. Music imbued with a defiant energy which can never die.

Which brings us to The Minutes. Channeling the primal surge of rampant garage rock 'n' roll with elements of the blues and gospel; The Minutes have honed their craft on the Irish gig circuit and beyond. Support slots along the way with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Supergrass and The Von Bondies have helped introduce them to audiences

  • 89 per cent of Irish office workers want a ‘greener' office Workers driven by concern for the environment over cost saving

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

89 per cent of Irish office workers would like their office to be more environmentally friendly, according to a recent survey by Epson Ireland. 92 per cent said the main driver in their wish for an environmentally friendly office is concern for the environment with only 5 per cent citing cost saving from green IT as a motivator. Despite Ireland's current economic condition, Irish workers still chose a genuine concern for the environment over any financial consideration.

Of these green-friendly office workers, 12 per cent said they wanted to ‘help save the environment' while 72 per cent of those surveyed said ‘it's important to have a responsible approach to the environment'. Despite this concern for better environmental practice, the majority of companies which they work for do not have basic environmental policies in place.

58 per cent of their companies have no

  • Airtricity League of Ireland First Division

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

Blues suffer ninth defeat after miserable display

IT was yet another defeat for Waterford United in the Airtricity League of Ireland First division on Friday night last as they lost to South East rivals Wexford Youths in what was a horrible encounter at the RSC. Ben Ryan struck for the only goal of the contest after 12 minutes as United suffered their ninth league defeat of the season, which is very disappointing considering the fact that many fancied the Blues for promotion this season.

Visiting keeper Packie Holden came to his sides rescue on six minutes when Conor Sinnott's quick thinking set up Paul Walsh and when the right-winger crossed into the area, Kevin Murray saw his header tipped brilliantly over the crossbar by the former United netminder.

When Sinnott fouled Youths midfielder Robert Vickers six minutes later 25 yards from goal, former

  • Blues News - Blues Make Maiden Trip To Fahy's Field

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

Waterford United suffered a bit of a reverse at the RSC on Friday when a well-organised Wexford Youths proved the better side on the night, and the Blues will be looking to put what was a bad night at the office behind them with a first ever trip to Fahy's Field to take on Mervue United on Friday next. Waterford's record against the Galwaymen has been good up to now at their temporary ground of Terryland Park, but since moving back to their home patch this season Mervue have lost there only three times, to Shelbourne, Limerick, and most recently Athlone when they finished with 10 men. The Blues will be hoping that striker Willie John Kiely will have recovered from the knock he received last Friday.

In the meantime, the Blues have a delightful distraction of a friendly

  • Ref Justice

    Wednesday, 20th July 2011

Waterford travelled to Limerick on Saturday evening for their All-Ireland football qualifier but were on the wrong end of a 0-14 to 0-9 scoreline. Unfortunately due to a prior engagement I was unable to attend but my lieutenant gave me a plethora of notes across the top of which he had written in capital letters "UNBELIEVABLE". Enquiring as to what this was or if in fact it was a headline, he proceeded to explain. With quarter of the game elapsed and Waterford with the advantage of the strong breeze, trailing 0-4 to 0-3, a long delivery from Mick Ahearne was fastened onto by Kilrossanty clubman Paul Whyte. The young forward skipped through but was upended by Limerick fullback Tom Stack. Referee Cormac Reilly rightly called "penalty". Players protested as is usual with perhaps defining decisions like this. Now this is

    Wednesday, 13th July 2011

There were harrowing scenes at the Tower Hotel on Monday night as countless parents expressed their desperation at the prospect of their children losing their special needs assistant.

Almost 250 parents and their children attended the protest meeting, organised by Independent Waterford TD Deputy John Halligan, opposing Government cuts to Special Needs education. Also present were a large group of teachers and special needs assistants from across the city and county, including guest speakers Maria Doyle, principal of Our Lady of Mercy Primary School and Maria Lindell of Waterford Area Partnership.

As parent and after parent took the microphone and described their deep concern and anguish about what the future will hold for their special needs child, Deputy Halligan called on the Government to cease their

Not so GR8 G8With world attention on Fermanagh as the meeting place of the latest G8 Summit it is no wonder that locals are basking in the reflected spotlight. We have all been told, if we haven't already experienced at first hand, the beauty of the location. We know about the exclusiveness of the hotels that the various leaders are going to be staying as well as some of their security detail. We know about the menus from which they will be choosing from. There is little about summit meeting that the …
